About me

Thank you for looking at ‘Erika Cook’ counselling. I guess something is troubling you for you to be reading this... So why not contact me for an appointment? - The first appointment is free - and see you if you think we can work together - there is no obligation to come back if you don't feel comfortable. I have an independent private practice here in Westcliff-on-Sea - 40 minutes from London and a ten minute walk from Westcliff station. My rooms are discreet and used exclusively for my clients and our work together. The therapy room is relaxed and cosy and not at all clinical. I love it when clients kick of their shoes and put their feet up.

If you are looking for a therapeutic service where you are heard, and perhaps understood, for the first time in your life by a non – judgemental therapist, then I may be the counsellor for you. After an initial consultation we can meet and see if you feel at ease so we can start to build a therapeutic relationship.  I believe that without a strong bond of trust between the therapist and client, therapy can be difficult.

My service is confidential – between me and you. There is no need for your employer, your family or any one else to know about what we talk about. I work with all ages for all types of difficulties. I can work with individuals, couples and families and children and young people. I encourage my clients to be part of the process, for example, we can practise mindfulness or use art or play for example,  or a combination of different therapies as a tool to relax and open up thoughts and feelings. The sessions are yours. I also offer hypnotherapy that has been extremely successful for people suffering from anxiety.

If you would like to book a consultation, please ring 07946510963 or you can email me by clicking on the above tile. You may have to leave a message or text as I may be with other clients. I appreciate that many of my clients have busy lives so my practice is open from 6.00 pm until 9.30 pm and at weekends. I am a registered member of the BACP and bound by it's ethical code of practice. I also appreciate that some people are not in paid employment, or are on low wages and that the cost of counselling can be a barrier - so I offer half price sessions. All are welcome.

Training, qualifications & experience

I completed my counselling training here in Southend over 5 years and a further year in London. I have worked therapeutically with children and adults on a range of issues such as abuse, self harm, self esteem issues, cultural issues, sexuality, family and depression, anxiety and serious illness. I myself have survived divorce, serious illness, bereavement and more. My life experiences help me to have empathy and not judge in any way but to help you to move forward to a more fulfilled life.

I have extensive experience with working with people with disabilities and with young people.  I received the Jack Petchey Award for Outstanding Leadership with Young People. I have received training and have understanding of working with clients on the autistic spectrum.

I have recently attended a workshop with the excellent charity YOUNGMINDS to understand more the distress of self-harm and the effect on families.

I am trained to masterclass level to practice hypnotherapy with clients in a counselling setting.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Hypnotherapy sessions involve you initially talking about your concerns - your clinical history, where we can build trust and confidence.  Feeling safe and comfortable helps the induction of the hypnotic trance. Goals for therapy are discussed and agreed.  Usually you will sit or lie and you will be induced into a hypnotic state - this may be by being asked to visualise walking down a country lane or stare at a fixed point. Your subconscious mind listens to suggestions made whilst in this very relaxed state. You are always in control and aware of the process. To return to full consciousness you may be counted back from 1 to 10 or you can do it by yourself. One or several sessions may be required depending on the topic.
