About me

It can be incredibly isolating to feel overwhelmed, sad, anxious or just simply numb and have no-one to talk to with whom you don't feel you have to censor yourself. I offer day, evening and weekend appointments either online, face to face or over the telephone at affordable rates.

A bit about me...
I believe that everyone has the capacity to be happy and at peace, no matter what the circumstances and so, I work with you, in your own time, to develop a perspective on the world and a belief in yourself that allows you to accept yourself, trust yourself and find a place of peace and contentment again.

Whether you're just looking for someone to offload to because everyone depends on you to hold it together, or you're keen to really develop a deeper self-awareness, you are able to book a free 30min consultation with me today by going to https://emmabrooke.acuityscheduling.com/ and choosing 'Initial Alignment Call'.

What happens when I contact you?
You can email me directly at emma@emmabrooke.net or go straight to https://emmabrooke.acuityscheduling.com/ and book a free 30min 'Alignment Call' with me (it takes you to my live calendar and you can see straight away what times are free and book yourself in).

The Alignment Call is a really good chance for us to briefly discuss over a secure video call or telephone (if you're in the UK) why you're thinking about counselling and to find out if we're a good fit. If we are, we can go ahead and schedule a first session. If it doesn't feel right for either of us, I may be able to recommend someone else to help.

How do you work?
I work mainly online via secure video (or via telephone if necessary) meaning that you are able to remain in the comfort of your own home and safe time and money travelling to and from an office. I also see face to face clients in the Pen Y Lon Clinic in the centre of Ruthin and see limited clients in Denbigh.

I'm an integrative therapist which means I've trained in a number of different modalities including CBT, Person-Centered, Humanistic, TA (transactional analysis) and mindfulness and choose a combination of approaches based on my client's needs at the time. Having trained as a yoga teacher I sometimes use meditation with clients as well if they would like.

The sessions are your time. So we can talk, or not talk, and I certainly would never try to force you into talking about something you didn't want to. It's a very client-led process whereby you get to explore what is troubling you, and I'll feedback what I heard from you and ask questions which help you to think about what you're experiencing from different perspectives to gain greater clarity and understanding of your situation and feelings.

Whilst it is never a walk in the park to work through your emotions, most of my clients have expressed how much better they feel for bringing their deeper feelings to the surface and having a safe and neutral place to explore them rather than trying to hide them all the time.

What's it like working online? Is it as effective? Do I need any special equipment?
Working online is a fairly new but fantastic way to work. Working online means we can still see each other, just via a computer or smartphone screen, and you remain in the comfort of your own surroundings, cutting out travel time altogether. The counselling is the same as it would be face to face, and, if you have a poor internet connection, I can also do telephone counselling. The biggest difference is that for online counselling, you'll need somewhere quiet where you won't be overheard (or a time when you will be on your own), rather than driving to a counselling office.

I use a secure video connection for the online work, which is a free and easy to use piece of software that you can get on your computer or smartphone. You need an internet connection and a reasonable amount of data allowance. If you have any questions about this please contact me and I can help.

How many sessions will I need and when will they be?
That really is difficult to say I'm afraid as it is your personal journey however, continuity is key so plan for 6-12 weekly sessions lasting 50mins each. You may need less or want to take a break, or you may wish to continue, or perhaps have one off sessions after you've dealt with your initial reason for coming.

Training, qualifications & experience

I completed my Advanced Integrative Professional Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling in 2014, following a year long placement at the City and East London Bereavement Service, previously funded by the NHS and based out of the Royal London Hospital. Prior to this I had completed a Certificate in Counselling, a Certificate in Hypnotherapy, the Level 3 CYQ Yoga Teacher qualification and a BA (Hons) in Human Resource Management and had a successful career in HR and Operations Management before retraining. I am currently studying to be a Mindfulness teacher, having studied this as part of my yoga teacher and counselling training.

My experience has taught me that it is often not about a specific tool or technique brought into the counselling room, but rather the genuine human connection between counsellor and client which can be of greatest benefit. To know that there is someone objective, outside of your day to day life, who supports you and believes in you is something sadly not enough people have experienced. This external support goes a huge way towards assisting you to build your own strength and resilience and to help you heal whatever it is that has been stopping you reaching full happiness.
