Elizabeth Houghton, counsellor and psychotherapist
Welcome to my directory page.
I am an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist dedicated to a private practice in Ashford, a 30 minute drive from Tenterden, Hythe, Folkestone, Canterbury and Maidstone. I am also an NHS counsellor in the Shepway area.
My passion is helping my clients in overcoming challenges and accessing their potential. I assist recovery of a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, stress and anger management, addictions, loss, trauma, low self-esteem and relationship issues.
My aim is to provide you with a sincere and sponsoring relationship and an environment that is safe, respectful and empowering. Feedback from my clients indicates that I am easy to talk to.
Coming from a contemporary approach, it is my belief that the mind and body work in synergy. Symptoms such as anxiety and stress are optimistically viewed as the body’s wisdom trying to ‘wake up’ without skill or guidance. Therapy is a collaborative process where inviting curiosity, awareness, and compassion can help you to understand and transform obstacles and access resources at a pace that's right for you. This goes beyond ‘quick fix’ approaches which can yield short term or disappointing results.
What you can expect
I facilitate either very specific outcomes or ones that are more open ended and wider ranging. The initial session is an opportunity for you to talk about your challenges and hopes whether big or small, for us to explore ways we can work together. A brief chat on the phone will be offered to answer any questions and alleviate concerns you may have. Please get in touch if you wish to discuss how we might work together. Sessions start as being weekly and may become less frequent as appropriate. Additional self-empowering activities that you can do between sessions will usually be offered, to greatly enhance the value of your investment.
Some of of the practices I draw on include:
- Contemporary Psychotherapy
- Neuro Linguistics Programming (NLP)
- Humanistic Therapy
- Problem and Solution focusing
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Training, qualifications & experience
Having studied complementary therapies for many years I was naturally drawn to talking therapies and for the last 12 years I have facilitated recovery of a diversity of issues in a variety of settings including abuse, community, GP surgeries, mental health and EAPs. I worked for a drug and alcohol service for 8 years where I provided counselling and ran groups for people with substance dependency and anger management issues, many of whom were involved in the criminal justice system.I initially trained in Humanistic Counselling and my skills-set has expanded to include Contemporary Psychotherapy and clinical hypnosis. I am also a Master NLP practitioner.
