Profile
"I have recommended you to a relative, even my friends noticed a change."
"Our sessions have been very helpful and have given me a different (better) perspective on things." "Excellent caring and confidential service, counselling has literally turned my life around."
WELCOME
The above comments are feedback I have received from former clients. I am empathic, understanding and genuine and although I may occasionally gently challenge clients, I am not critical or judgemental but aim to walk by their side offering support. My aim is to help people make sense of their life experiences and to look at choices and options for change.
I am committed to being moral, straightforward and honest in dealings with my clients. I hope this enables them to feel that they are able to be open and honest with me.
I firmly believe in both ‘talking the talk’ and ‘walking the walk’ I incorporate many of approaches I use in counselling into my own life. For example, I find mindfulness, cognitive behavioural techniques and transactional analysis to be very useful in promoting emotional wellbeing.
Self-care is crucial for anyone. Personally, I find exercise (my crosstrainer), playing the piano, walking in the Peak District, reading and humour greatly enhance my overall wellbeing.
HOW CAN COUNSELLING HELP?
Research consistently shows that counselling helps to reduce the effects of stress, depression and anxiety and can help with other emotional, behavioural, personal and interpersonal difficulties.
Often we can work through issues alone or with friends and family. There are times when this is not possible and we may need to talk freely to an unbiased professional in a safe and supportive environment.
Counselling aims to help clients find their own direction in life and make their own choices. A counsellor may make suggestions to help clients along the way and some therapies offer particular techniques for specific problems.
WHAT I OFFER
I am a qualified, accredited and very experienced counsellor who offers one-to-one therapy for a wide range of issues. I have been accredited with the BACP since 1 May 2007. Having obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Humanistic Person-Centred Counselling in 2005 I use this is as a base for all my counselling. My work has brought me into contact with a diverse range of human experiences and I have pursued relevant training in response to these including alcohol addiction, anger management, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, rape, bereavement, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, work related stress and post traumatic stress.

EXPLANATION OF APPROACHES
Humanistic Person-Centred Psychotherapy - In HPC the therapist does not act like an expert of the client's experience but rather aims to offer warmth, acceptance and honesty as the client explores their own truth. It is in within this environment that clients are encouraged to grow and change according to their priorities.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - CBT is effective in raising awareness of the origins of current negative thinking and helps us to change unwanted patterns of thinking and behaviour.
Transactional Analysis (TA) - TA is a great approach for gaining a greater understanding of personal or work relationship issues as it helps to raise awareness of how we are currently interacting with others and how this may be related to our interactions with parents or significant others from our childhood.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) - EMDR is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) to resolve symptoms resulting from traumatic experiences and PTSD.
Mindfulness - Mindfulness teaches us to focus on the moment, allowing troublesome or upsetting thoughts and feelings to come and go, without getting caught up in them.
MY WORKING LIFE TO DATE
I had quite a varied working life before I decided to embark on my training as a Counsellor. My previous roles have included working as a Bi-lingual Secretary, Personal Assistant, Costs and Budgets Manager, Computer Analyst\Programmer and IT Manager. It was whilst working as an IT Manager that I decided that I wished to change direction and focus on people rather than computers! Since completing my training as a Counsellor in 2005, I have had the privilege of working with many people in various settings including GP Practices, in an NHS Employee Counselling Service, for an Alcohol Agency and for Women's Aid. I now work exclusively in Private Practice.
