About me

I am a qualified and registered psychotherapist and hypnotherapist. Over the past 25 years, I have developed a repertoire of skills to help clients at all levels of personal wellbeing: mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. My approach is holistic, which means I treat the whole person, not just the immediate symptoms. I see the person as a unique individual and take into account all his or her special characteristics. You may not always realise it, but you hold within you the solution to your problems, and it is up to me to help you unlock the resources you already have, rather than try to impose prescribed solutions.

Sessions are interactive and responsive to your needs. You are in control and dictate the pace. The aim is to help you to help yourself, in other words to empower you to take control of your life and achieve the goals you want. The first session will be concerned with finding out about you, and assessing how best to treat your particular problem. The therapeutic approach most suited to you will be discussed with you beforehand. I will integrate a range of therapeutic methods as appropriate, such as: cognitive therapy, eye movement desensitisation and reprogramming (EMDR), relaxation therapy, hypnotherapy, exploring the family emotional map, age regression and memory integration, visualisation and dream work.

Some people think that therapy is a long, painful, and expensive process. It doesn't have to be like that. I am a skilled and experienced therapist, and once trust and rapport has been built up, even intractable problems can be greatly alleviated, or resolved in a comparatively short space of time.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have been in private practice since 1995. I initially trained in psychosocial counselling (450 hours) in Lifespring, Belfast, exploring counselling from both transpersonal and family systems perspectives. I then obtained a postgraduate diploma in Therapeutic Hypnosis and Psychotherapy in Regent's College, London in 1995, followed by a Diploma in Ericksonian Advanced Hypnotherapy in 1998.

In 2004 I completed training in EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) at the University of Ulster, and in 2007 in TFT (thought field therapy). Then, in 2011 I obtained a certificate in cognitive therapy methods.

Most recently, over the past four years, 2012 - 2015, I have undertaken intensive training in shamanism at the Irish Centre for Shamanic Studies at Dunderry Park, Co Meath. I am now a qualified shamanic practitioner and counsellor (2015). Presently I am two thirds way through transpersonal psychotherapy training and expect to complete the course in 2021.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Accredited register membership

Fees

Additional information

I offer potential clients an initial free half hour consultation, either by telephone, or face to face, where the person can meet me and find out about my service.

Thereafter, actual therapy sessions are charged at an hourly rate of 40 pounds. Sessions generally last between one to two hours. The length of the session is negotiable and depends on the needs of the client and the therapeutic methods that are being used. For example, I have found that EMDR tends to be most effective when sessions are a minimum of 90 minutes in duration.

When I work

I am flexible, but usually I see clients Wednesday to Saturday, including evening appointments.

Further information

My practice is based in the privacy of a rural setting, in a traditional cottage near Portglenone. I offer evening and Saturday appointments for clients who are working. Clients can be assured of complete confidentiality.
