About me

Hi, my name is Dylan, and I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist specialising in adult psychotherapy.

I have 14 years of experience in private practice working with people who suffer from anxiety, depression, bereavement and loss, stress, trauma, disconnection, and relationship difficulties.

I offer a friendly and down-to-earth approach to therapy, providing a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to talk. With training and experience in the main evidence-based psychotherapies, I am able to work in a flexible and collaborative way, tailoring therapy to the specific needs of the person I see.

Therapy with a focus on emotion
While therapies that focus on changing thoughts and behaviour can be helpful, there is a growing emphasis in psychotherapy research on the importance of working with emotion.

You may have had an experience where you felt as if you had a good intellectual understanding of a problem, yet it was still difficult to change; intellectual insight is not the same as emotional insight.

Focusing on emotions in therapy, we would work together to put feelings into words, bringing clarity to threatening, confusing or contradictory emotions. A space to explore emotions can help you to better recognise problematic patterns in relationships, uncover meaning, and, importantly, enable you to discover options that had not been clear before.

Training, qualifications & experience

Professional
I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Psychologist and as a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society, in the Division of Clinical Psychology.

I have training and experience in the main evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities: psychodynamic, humanistic/person-centred and cognitive behavioural therapy. Integrating the theory and techniques of these different approaches enables a therapist to tailor psychotherapy to the particular needs of the client. This approach may take the form of intensive, time-limited therapy for someone experiencing intense distress, in order to help them regain a sense of emotional balance. At other times, integrative psychotherapy may involve medium to long-term work which is more explorative in nature, and may be better suited to understanding more deep-seated emotional difficulties and troubling relationship patterns.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I also have a special interest in helping people who struggle with feelings of shame, an emotion which often plays a hidden but pervasive role in a wide range of psychological distress, especially depression and trauma.
