Hello, my name is Diana Simpson-Hinds; I am a qualified and experienced Psychotherapist and the Director of Blooming Families. I have been providing counselling support to students in schools and families since 2006.
As you know, nurturing children can be joyous but also challenging at times; especially, when there is a breakdown in communication. It can feel like both adult and child are speaking a different language or from another world. It can cause frustration when there is a block in understanding and as the tension builds neither can find common ground.
When children display challenging behaviours; it may be due to family breakdown, grief, anger or anxiety. They might also be feeling lonely or worried, and this prevents them from socialising because they don’t feel like they belong or can fit in but there is hope!
You might be a first-time parent or have been parenting for some years and feeling overwhelmed with the responsibilities. However, it can be helpful to speak to someone neutral about your feelings regarding your child's behaviour; implementing discipline; academic performance or breakdown in family relationships.
The intention is to help parents and children to build a strong foundation where the family can work together or individually. Therefore, several principles are used to accommodate the needs of the family since they are the expert of their lives and are responsible for their development. Alternatively, the family may be assisted to identify the issues they are experiencing with the focus on finding a solution. Each member can look at their perception of the problem; how it influences their feelings and their behaviour; while seeking to find an amicable outcome.
Blooming Families offer groups to children and teens covering topics on Confidence Building; Self-Esteem; Anger Management and Self-Awareness where they can meet like-minded people of the same age who are going through similar issues. Group work takes place after school, but individual and family work is conducted at a private office or by Skype to make the service more convenient.
The work is carried out in a safe and confidential environment; that is non-judgmental. The family is accepted for who they are and what they bring to the session. The support provided is honest and transparent which helps in building mutual trust in the therapeutic relationship.
