About me

I am an experienced psychotherapist and supervisor working in Private Practice and as a Principal Psychotherapist and Supervisor in the NHS. I have been helping people from Kent, Medway and London for many years. I deal with a broad range of mental health conditions and emotional difficulties that someone may experience and be confused about. Treatment is completely confidential. You can refer yourself to me of be referred by your doctor or other agency.

I am also an experienced and trained supervisor of psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapists, both experienced and in training.

I offer both Psychotherapy and Supervision in face to face consultations and online via video link.

Psychotherapy & Services

Psycho-analytic Psychotherapy provides a containing, professional, therapeutic relationship within which to explore and talk about your problems. Unconscious conflicts and motivations, often rooted in the past events and situations, can cause distress and internal conflict and need to be addressed to give insight into what's really wrong and relieve emotional and mental difficulties you may be experiencing. This means taking your feelings seriously. Working such insights through in therapy can promote change in the present and lead to a more conflict-free experience of living, for yourself and the people you are involved with. When you begin psychoanalytic psychotherapy you start a growth process, which reduces emotional suffering, can prevent disastrous behaviour, improves resistance to illness, makes life more meaningful and can console the person who is desperately unhappy.

Psycho-dynamic Psychotherapy is based on a psychoanalytic approach to treatment, but is less frequent, usually once a week, and does not make use of the couch.

Intercultural Therapy is a form of Psycho-dynamic Psychotherapy that takes into account your whole being , including your communal life experience in the world, both past and present. It addresses conscious and unconscious assumptions that cultural and racial differences involve, leading to a clearer understanding of what is actually happening and fostering a more grounded sense of personal identity. It can also address psychological, cultural, racial and personal problems that confront and distress refugees or immigrants feeling unsettled and lacking in confidence. Intercultural psycho-dynamic psychotherapy can help people from diverse backgrounds, presenting with a wide range of problems.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an effective trauma therapy treatment. I am a fully trained EMDR practitioner. A disturbing memory/incident/event/anxiety is identified and treated by helping you to process 'frozen traumas' and clear anxieties, working towards relief of your symptoms.

I also provide three groups that run once-weekly:

Psycho-educational Group for new parents
focusing on the emotional needs of their infants and parental behaviour.
Men's Group for men who feel they need support in coping with life in general.
Refugee Group
for refugees and asylum-seekers needing therapy and support.

THINKING ABOUT HAVING PSYCHOTHERAPY?

If you have been referred or have referred yourself for psychotherapy treatment, or if you are thinking about therapy for yourself, there are a few things you should consider beforehand.

Prioritize

If you are considering psychotherapy, you probably want to deal with some issues that have a life-dominating quality about them. They have been going on a long time. You may not understand why you feel or behave in certain ways and this affects you and those around you negatively. So...you need to prioritize your psychotherapy treatment. Think carefully about your budget and set aside enough money for fees. Private Psychotherapy is costly and you will have to prioritize it, otherwise what is the point? Either you are serious about change or not.

Emotional work

Psychotherapy is not advice. Neither is it a rescue service. It is often tough emotional work related to past developmental experience. Above all else psychotherapy is about taking your emotions very seriously indeed and working through them, not only understanding them. Exploring the the way your past impacts your present life is usually unavoidable. This takes time and trust. A trusting relationship with your therapist takes time to build. It needs to be a professional relationship built on rock, not on sand and be able to withstand the emotional storms that may come.

Not a chat

Psychotherapy talk is not a chat, not a normal conversation. It is treatment. It does not necessarily follow the normal rules of conversation e.g. you say something and I respond, then you talk and I respond etc. It takes a bit of getting used to and won't always feel comfortable, even thougn it also will. It has been compared to surgery in that words are actions that are like scalpels making an incision in the right place at the right time in order to heal the emotional problem.
