About me

I am a fully qualified BACP registered Counsellor and a qualified substance misuse practitioner specialising directly in and the issues surrounding addiction.

Although I specialise in the addictions field, I also offer counselling for a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationship issues and bereavement, however, I have a strong interest in problems surrounding addiction not only for the person suffering but for families and loved ones too. Addiction can affect all aspect of the persons life and their relationships causing distress and emotional upheaval. I have many years experience of helping families affected by addiction.

I also have my own experience of addiction issues and have been drug and alcohol free for the last 10 years. This gives me greater insight and understanding when it comes to the issues relating to addiction.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Testimonials

Client 1 - "Before my course of counselling with Derek, I didn't know what to expect . . . I wasn't even sure if I wanted to be there. Within moments, Derek helped me to feel comfortable, I was able to speak about things I'd never spoken about before, he said things that made me feel 'not weird' for the things going on in my head and I soon realised this was my opportunity to do something special for myself.

Just 15 weeks down the line I've been able to make sense of so much, and make real changes that will benefit me and those closest to me for the rest of our lives.

Derek is brilliant at what he does, not only because of his skills as a counsellor, of which he has many, but because of his skills as a human, able to connect with other humans in a way that is so hard to find in everyday life.

Rarely will you find a more honest, wise and sensitive bloke."

Client 2 - "I initially sought counselling to assist me in dealing with a family member who has an addiction problem.  I also felt I had lost touch with my true self.  Derek helped me to see the role I play in building my own happiness, wellbeing, and self-esteem.  He assisted me in setting and maintaining healthy boundaries in my relationships.

With his guidance I began a journey of self-discovery in which I finally understand a great deal more about myself.  I uncovered the real reasons why I do certain things or feel intensely in certain situations.  That awareness allows me to be more balanced and strong.

It was not always easy.  Effort is required but it is truly worth it.  I found the experience liberating and enlightening.  What you need is an open mind and the willingness to look at things in a different way.  When that willingness exists, Derek can help you to be better and feel better.

For the first time in years I feel like I am living my life as me - the genuine me.  My journey will continue as long as I live, but I am stronger emotionally than I have ever been.  I have taken control of my life.  This is outstanding.

I thank Derek for his experience, thoughtfulness and insight.  Seeking his counsel was one of the best things I have ever done for myself.   If you are considering counselling with Derek, I whole-heartedly encourage you to do so!"
