About me

Hi, I’m Denise and passionate about supporting you on your journey to where you want to be, this could be feeling better with mental well being or supporting future work or life changes. I offer face to face,  Online Therapy, telephone, Video call etc, hushmail (secure email) if preferred.

Living day to day with anxiety, depression, sadness, feeling overwhelmed or struggling with grief and loss can be totally exhausting.

Do you want to take back control of your life? Your first step in asking for help is the hardest and you have just taken your first step by looking at counselling and how this can help you.

In addition to general counselling I also offer specialist counselling for grief & loss, not only the death of a loved one but also the loss of a relationship or life change. I am also an Accredited Pregnancy and Infant Loss Counselling Professional for parents who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

How Can Counselling Help You?

There are times when you may feel overwhelmed by life, especially in today's society and financial uncertainty. When our mental health is in good shape it is much easier to cope with the demands of everyday life.

Imagine the mind and body as a sponge, it can only absorb so much before it is overwhelmed, unable to absorb any more before it starts to leak and breakdown. Life can affect our mental health in much the same way and it is at times like this we need support from someone else to help us mop up and get mind and body into better working order.

Counselling is an opportunity to talk about what troubles you and be listened to in a way which helps you to understand yourself better, including your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. I offer you counselling in a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable.

Counselling is a very personal process. Sometimes it is necessary to talk about painful feelings or difficult decisions, so you may (not always) go through a period of feeling you are going backwards, this is normal and doesn't last for long. However, counselling should enable you to feel better in the long-run. It can also be an interesting and helpful experience which enables many people to feel much happier about themselves and their lives.

Usually it will take a number of counselling sessions before it starts to make a difference. However on rare occasions, a single session may be enough. It doesn’t work for everybody, you may just not be ready yet. You may be talking about very personal and often painful things; it can sometimes be difficult to keep going. Despite this, it is often worth the effort as you can be helped to work through problems. As well as regular sessions I also offer adhoc sessions which is often a useful way to top up your well being as and when you feel in need of occasional confidential off load space.

Together we can work at your pace on your road to recovery or goal however short or long your road may be.

I also work with you as a Life Coach if you have more specific end goals. Life coaching can be effective in many situations, for example helping your career direction and development, or for personal fulfilment or life change more generally.

Coaching is not the same as counselling, it is still a confidential conversation the focuses on your future, together we will look at where you are now, where you want to be and plan achievable goals to get there.

Working together we will explore your strengths, weaknesses and transferable skills to help you make the changes you desire.

I have a therapy room in a lovely old Tudor building in the centre of Newark on Trent and access to another venue close by if ground floor room is required. In special circumstances home visits can be explored as another option if you are unable to access locations in Newark. There will be an additional small fee of 25p per mile to help cover my travel costs, no charge for travel if clients live within a 5 mile radius of Newark on Trent.

Each appointment will last for 60 minutes, with the last 10 minutes for reviewing the session and bringing it to a close - evening appointments up to 7pm. I work on: Long-term face-to-face work, Short-term face-to-face work and Time-limited counselling.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
