Why choose me?
Your uniqueness is what matters to me. I am committed to helping you achieve your goals, whatever they may be, in a very individual way tailored to your specific needs.
My aim is to offer a safe, caring, professional, non-judgemental and confidential working relationship based on trust, openness, joint participation and free from counselling 'jargon'.My role is supportive and facilitative in helping you find and connect with your inner strengths and resources, become stronger and make changes so that you are able to cope better in your world. Our working relationship is important and to it I bring warmth, care, empathy, interest and attentive listening together with optimism, strength and professionalism from many years of experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist.
Having practised for some years as a matrimonial solicitor, I am now a fully Accredited, Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have 16 post-qualification years of experience in different settings and currently have my own private practice in central Exeter.
I work one-to-one with adults of all ages covering a wide range of issues. I like to work in a creative way individually tailored to each client. The work may vary from simply wanting to offload to lengthier, complex work. It may involve acquiring new life skills and strategies, and/or learning specific techniques, for example to help with panic attacks and anger management.
Main areas of work include low self-esteem, lack of confidence, loss, all forms of abuse (emotional, psychological, physical and sexual), anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, trauma and eating disorders.
My approach is integrative, mainly Person-Centred, incorporating Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis (TA ) and Gestalt when helpful. I can explain what this means for you in our first session. The work varies from short-, medium- to long-term.
Counselling is a talking therapy and our work is enriched by incorporating, when appropriate, techniques such as chart work, writing exercises, artwork, stonework, visualization, breathing and relaxation techniques, and focusing (5 senses).
