About me

You may feel overwhelmed by your problems, but all problems, big or small, have a solution. With years of experience in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy I use this effective approach to help people sort out their difficulties and improve their quality of life. I work online only and offer flexible hours, including Saturday mornings. Sessions are available to couples, individuals and families.

Why this approach?

Although also trained in systemic and psychodynamic therapies I chose to specialise in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) because it is a logical and rational form of therapy. It has the added benefit of giving clients helpful tools and processes, which they can use for any future difficulties. Clients prefer and trust the process for this reason. Many report finding this therapy approach a surprising, engaging and constructive experience. It's not formulaic or a one-size-fits-all approach, nor a hotchpotch of many therapeutic approaches. I work with individuals, couples, young people (12+ yrs) and families. I'm DBS checked and cleared.

How do I work with this approach?

  • I help you to work logically and rationally through your difficulties in order to gain new perspectives and to find a range of solutions that are individual to you and which fit with your life – if they are realistic and manageable they will be easier to maintain.
  • Solution Focused Brief Therapy offers an ideal way of dealing with anxiety, panic attacks, depresssion, couple conflict and the present inhibiting effects of past trauma. Rather than letting them continue to bog you down and destroy your peace of mind it encourages you to gain control of your situation and make changes that will free you from those influences to move forward.
  • I make suggestions and offer tools for change, so this therapy approach is active and collaborative. And Solution Focused Brief Therapy is not a talking shop which drags on forever, draining your purse.

Solution Focused Therapy works well for a range of problems including anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, cross-cultural issues, career difficulties and  many life changes. Clients whose lives are generally running smoothly but who just wish to discuss a single issue with someone neutral, also find it an excellent form of therapy for sorting out this issue quickly and effectively.

I thoroughly enjoy working with people and they report back on a positive counselling experience with me. Clients have to be prepared to do some work and make some changes, but this doesn't have to be an unhappy and negative experience. It certainly doesn't have to be long-winded. I place great importance on establishing a good therapeutic relationship which is confidential, non-judgmental and empathic and where you can feel comfortable discussing and resolving difficult issues. No smoke and mirrors!

I work online only (zoom and call), counselling clients throughout the UK and abroad. Clients who work flexible hours or work from home find this particularly suitable since they can now access my services to fit better with their working week and family commitments - many do sessions during lunch hours or before work in the mornings. I work flexible hours, including evenings and Saturday mornings, so arranging appointments which suit your schedule need not be a problem.  See comments about online counselling in the Further Information section.

It is difficult trying to source the best professional in any field, not least a therapist, and this is further complicated by there being so many therapies on offer.  So if you have any queries feel free to call for a quick chat, or email me without obligation.  I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have towards finding what is right for you.

You will find additional details and a fuller description of my practice on my website, the address for which is listed at the top of this page.

Training, qualifications & experience

MA – Relationship Therapy

BA(Hons)

PGDip – Relationship Therapy

MBACP  -  I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

My past experience has included working as a therapist for two large national charities. I prefer to work full-time in private practice. Private practice gives me the opportunity of offering a confidential and truly professional service where the client is valued as an intelligent, competent and unique individual. When you book my service you know you will be seeing me, unlike large organisations and agencies where you will be assigned to whomever is available and often an inexperienced trainee.

Apart from solution-focused brief therapy I have trained in and worked extensively with these approaches:

Narrative therapy

Systemic therapy

Psychodynamic therapy

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

Some clients are unsure about online therapy.  It's becoming increasingly popular and it certainly allows quicker access to my service. It works well for couples, individuals and family therapy.

Some comments from my clients about online therapy:

  • I can arrange session times to suit my and my family's timetable better.
  • I feel more secure talking about difficult things if I'm doing online therapy at home.
  • I work from home so I don't have the exhaustion of travelling to a therapy session, especially after work in the evening.
  • My partner does child care while I'm in a session.
  • I find it more natural.
  • lt's less intimidating  than talking about difficult things in unfamiliar surroundings. And why are the chairs always grubby in therapy rooms?
  • I don't have to worry about disabled access.
  • I can see that the therapist is really plugged in and working directly with me; very different to the no-input therapy I had previously where she sat across the room and nearly fell asleep!

So all good reasons to give it a try.
