Debbie Crookston UKCP & BACP Accredited Psychotherapist
The Withdean Practice
2a Church Road
I am a UKCP and BACP accredited Psychodynamic counsellor and Psychotherapist offering both brief solution focused counselling and open ended counselling and psychotherapy. Prior to training as a counsellor I worked for 16 years in the NHS as a nurse practitioner, gaining experience in both adult general and mental health. I bring to my work as a therapist a mindfulness of the physical, emotional, social and psychological aspects that make up the whole person. In addition to my training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, I draw from the theories of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Systemic Family therapy and Humanistic therapy in order to incorporate elements of these approaches in line with the needs of individual clients.
I work in private practice from comfortable consulting rooms situated in Brighton and Hove, easily accessed by public transport and with plenty of metered on street parking available nearby. Daytime and some evening appointments are available throughout the week.
'I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.' [Carl Jung]
If you are experiencing distress or anxiety, going through a life stage crisis or relationship difficulties, then coming for counselling or psychotherapy can be the first step towards finding crucial help or support. Therapy is also an investment in yourself, resource for personal growth and a space for you to begin to explore your potential for creative and purposeful living. As a psychodynamic practitioner I am interested in a person's life experiences from childhood on, and in identifying and becoming curious about the relational and behavioural patterns that repeat themselves, causing distress and unhappiness. These patterns can often be rooted in the unconscious and difficult to make sense of alone. Talking about your present and past experiences in therapy can begin to bring about a subtle but profound change in your sense of self, in your relationships and in the ability to find pleasure and purpose in living.
An initial appointment gives you the opportunity to meet with me to decide if you could feel comfortable with me and my approach to therapy. This first session is also the chance for me to assess whether I have the skills and expertise best suited to your needs.I am able to refer on to other specialist practitioners if necessary.
