About me

My name is David Wootton and I am a privately-practicing, person-centred counsellor. I offer one-to-one therapy for a wide range of issues including relationship issues, affairs, depression, stress/ anxiety, low self esteem, family related issues, bereavements, culture related issues, sexual and domestic abuse, bullying, self-harm and concerns relating to sexual identity.

My priority is to offer a professional, welcoming and flexible service. Short or long-term counselling is always negotiable and I am often able to work with clients who have irregular shift patterns at work or inflexible child-care arrangements.

The focus of the counselling is to work at a pace and depth that feels right for you in order to help you make the changes that you really want in your life. I am also able to work creatively if necessary: drawing, poetry, letter-writing and "emotional-literacy" cards can all be extremely useful ways of helping you to complement the words that you use and help you develop a more comprehensive understanding of your situation.

All contact, therapeutic or otherwise will be treated as strictly confidential: before, during and after the counselling has taken place.

If you feel that you would like to ask any questions at all then feel free to phone or email me, or use the "contact" page on my website. I will not try and convince you that you need counselling, however I will always leave the door open for you if you decide that this is what you want.

Training, qualifications & experience

Dip HE Therapeutic Counselling

Member BACP

My final two years of training involved working in The University of Bradford counselling service, providing counselling for both staff and students. The service is very well established and professionally organised. Whilst there I cultivated my style as an open, flexible and warm counsellor. I deeply enjoyed working with clients from a particularly diverse range of cultural backgrounds.

I also trained with a local counselling organisation which accepted private and primary-care referrals. I continued to work there as a professional counsellor and assessor before deciding to work independently as a private-practitioner.

Since establishing my practice in 2008, I have successfully continued to work with privately referred clients. My work encompasses counselling for teenagers (13 years +), with issues around anxiety, depression, bullying, identity, sexuality, neurodiversity and self-esteem amongst many more. If you are concerned as a parent, please feel free to arrange a time to discuss how I can help. I worked for Step2 Young People's Project in Bradford for several years as a contracted counsellor and have continued to work with teenagers since then.

I work on contract with Cellar Trust, engaging in short term face-to-face, telephone and online counselling, having formerly worked with Aire Wharfe and Craven Counselling, formerly Versa in Keighley. I have enjoyed an extensive counselling career along side these organisations over many years and hope to continue this essential and valuable work indefinitely.

I also have enjoyed many thousands of counselling hours, engaging in Employee Assistance Program work. This is short-term, solution-based therapy, with clients presenting a wide range of issues. This work involves identifying the main concern that the client wants to work on, and focusing our time developing strategies to help manage and contain the primary issues.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
