It is a profoundly effective and powerful method to access and resolve difficulties anchored in our human experience. Graeme has been working as artist and facilitator of arts projects for 16 years, in both mental health and learning disability settings. He qualified as an art psychotherapist in 2007. Recognising the importance of considering the client as an individual, he has a psychodynamic, philosophical and phenomenological approach to practice. I've dealt with a lot of very early issues that were inaccessible to me
using the usual talking therapies. The ability to use creative ways of
working has enabled me to express myself in a way that I haven't been able
to do before. Our work has helped me personally and professionally, has
impacted upon my relationships with my partner and my children.
I would describe Imke as firm, challenging and at times directing, she is
understanding but doesn't allow wallowing in self-pity -there is no hiding
Due to the non-verbal and imagery focus of the work arts therapy reaches into deeper levels of memory, experience, behaviour and attitude (attachment). Due to this, and that we therefore do not have to verbalise painful or unbearable emotions, art therapy works where communication has become a barrier. Barriers in verbal communication can be from inability or unwillingness speak about emotions, but also by 'over analysing everything' which often makes us not "see wood for trees".
I work regularly with clients who have been in analyses or counselling for years but are still suffering from the same symptoms. Many can say what their problems are, but have no hope nor access to their ability to move; but live in a feeling of being stuck, lost, worthless or un-helpable. My holistic work with creative media shifts the focus away from analyses toward progression, movement - creating life and future.
Many clients who come for couples counselling, relationship issues, depression, career counselling and low self-confidence find that a short 6-session therapy is sufficient to shift blocks, clear (communication) ways, motivate and resolve issues so they can take important decision, re-connect to their wishes, strength and hopes and move forward.
Most of my clients with a traumatic experience, both in the past and present have successfully finished their therapy within 12 month. This includes bereavement, child related issues (attachment), post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd), postnatal, depression termination/abortion/ miscarriage.
For clients who suffer from long standing mental health issues like abuse, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd), anxiety and personality disorders, I will be there for as long as it takes, I work alongside other treatments or fully independently, whatever you need.
As professional coach and consultant for businesses I work with emotion management (often faced as anger management),low self-esteem, stress and work related issues. My coaching approach can see at www.imkewood.co.uk.
