About us

ARE YOU ON A LOW INCOME OR BENEFITS AND UNABLE TO ACCESS PRIVATE FEE-PAID COUNSELLING?

DO YOU NEED MORE THAN A LIMITED-TERM COUNSELLING PROGRAMME, YET STILL AT LOW COST?

THEN COUNSELLING INITIATIVES COULD BE FOR YOU.

PLEASE NOTE IN RESPECT OF ONGOING COVID 19 ISSUES THAT, IN ADDITION TO FACE TO FACE COUNSELLING, WE NOW OFFER ONLINE AND TELEPHONE COUNSELLING.

Regrettably and due to recent severe increases in overheads, we have recently had to  increase the donation amount we ask for to £15.00 per session.

Counselling Initiatives is a charity that has been operating since 2001 and has an impeccable record in the provision of unlimited-term counselling for those on low incomes or benefits. We are supported entirely by client donations.

We operate from our practice centres in Hornsey Vale, North London and Twickenham, South West London. Clients can self-refer via Counselling Directory or other means, their GP or via other referral agencies (eg a time-limited counselling provider, local wellbeing providers etc)

All counsellors are volunteers, either on placement or private practitioners who wish to offer their time to support those unable to afford private, fee-paid counselling. Those on placement are trainees  in the final stages of their qualification. This is standard practice within the counselling profession and each counsellor is thoroughly assessed for their competencies in relation to the presenting conditions of clients. We only take on counsellors who are recommended to us by the training establishment they are qualifying with.

Training, qualifications & experience

All our counsellors belong to or are in the process of registering with a professional body such as the UKCP or BACP.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
