Dr Cordelia Galgut, MBACP (Snr. Accred.) HCPC reg. Counselling Psychologist
Most often, clients want my help with problems that are causing them a lot of stress, such as relationship problems, work problems, struggles adapting to change, low self-esteem, being emotionally or/and sexually abused, in a violent relationship, being bullied, going through a divorce, worrying about having an affair, coping with an illness, being bereaved, as well as many other life stressors. These problems can often cause acute or/and ongoing generalised anxiety, anger, panicky feelings, depression, post-traumatic stress, as well as numerous other emotional effects.
I have worked in private practice for the last fifteen years, seeing a diverse group of clients. I work with both individuals and couples, as well as supervising fellow practitioners. I see people at my home near Blackheath, South East London. I hope I have created an informal environment in my place of work and my style is informal, too. I know, first hand, how scary coming to therapy can be, as I have had many years of therapy myself! Therefore, I also know how useful therapy can be. It is not always an easy process though, but most people find it very rewarding, whether they have a few sessions or a longer period of time in therapy. I always encourage people to come and meet me for one session, before they commit to further sessions with me, because I believe that no useful therapy will take place unless my client feels comfortable enough with me.
I am an integrative therapist, so I use a variety of approaches in order to help people who come to me for emotional support. My years of experience as a therapist have taught me that no one approach suits everyone, which is why I work in this way. I also believe that the more genuine I can be, the more likely it is that my client and I will build a good relationship and research indicates that a good relationship between a therapist and client can make a big difference to whether a client has a successful experience in therapy or not
I always encourage my clients to give me feedback on how they find sessions, so that we can work together to provide them with the best and most useful experience in therapy. I am also flexible about how often people come to therapy, providing we both think that, for example, coming every 2 weeks is of as much or more use to them than coming weekly. I am also aware that not everyone can afford weekly sessions.
