  • Anxiety
  • Relationship issues
  • Generalised anxiety disorder

  • Depression
  • Lack of confidence
  • Work Related Issues
  • Emotional or Sexual difficulties
  • Abuse
  • Bereavement

Other areas of counselling I deal with, can be found lower down this page.

My role as a Counsellor is to enable you, the client, to explore many aspects of your life, including your feelings, by talking openly and freely. Talking in such a way is rarely possible with family or friends, who are likely to be emotionally involved and have opinions and biases that may be detrimental to the success of the counselling.

It is therefore important that the counsellor is not emotionally involved with you the client and does not become so during the counselling sessions. The Counsellor neither judges, nor offers advice. The Counsellor gives you the client an opportunity to express difficult feelings such as anger, resentment, guilt and fear, for example, in a confidential environment. The counsellor may encourage you the client, to examine parts of your life that you may have found difficult or impossible to face before.

There may be some exploration of early childhood experiences in order to throw some light on why you the individual reacts or responds in certain ways in given situations. This is often followed by considering ways in which you might choose to change such behaviours.

Effective counselling reduces confusion, allowing you to make effective decisions leading to positive changes in your attitude and/or behaviour.

Effective counselling is not advice-giving and is not acting on someone else's behalf (these are more the roles of a life coach). The ultimate aim of counselling is to enable you to make your own choices, reach your own decisions and to act upon them.

Relationships can be complex and whatever your connections are with people they can become problematic from time to time. The pressures of modern life can put a huge amount of stress on us, which may result in arguments and miscommunications with those around us. This can leave us feeling angry, disappointed, rejected and lonely.

If you are suffering because of relationship problems, counselling or psychotherapy can help you discover healthier patterns of relating to others.

I also offer Supervision, Training and Life Coaching.

Training, qualifications & experience

MBACP Senior (Supervisor) Accreditation
MBACP Accreditation Individual
DipC Humanistic Counselling/Psychotherapy
Level 3 Cert Counselling Skills and Theory

I have been providing Counselling, Psychotherapy and Life Coaching for over 25 years, working with all ages and every issue imaginable. Nothing surprises me or is too strange or difficult. I have worked in Psychiatric Hospitals, Day Programs, Residential Treatment Centers and Out-Patient Therapy Agencies. I work with children and adults, couples, families, and groups. I work within organizations, as well as privately.

I have facilitated Accredited behaviour programmes. An accredited programme is a series of activities aimed at working with individuals to support them in a better understanding of themselves. Accreditation shows that these programmes are evidence-based and congruent with the 'What Works' literature.

TSP (Thinking Skills Programme) – A cognitive skills programme which addresses the way an individual thinks and their behaviour associated with that thinking. It supports the person to develop skills in setting goals and making plans to achieve these.

I have extensive experience working with Eating disorders. Providing emotional and cognitive support. Using Interventions to raise awareness of and challenge existing rigid behaviour patterns, explore the defensive motivation behind them and their consequences. Encourage clients to be autonomous and take responsibility for and control of their lives. To provide encouragement and support during this process. To support clients to achieve a healthier and more fulfilling life.

I have experience as a Drug and Alcohol Psychotherapist working in a residential setting as well as in the community. The work required daily involvement in an addiction treatment programme which is required for the optimal benefit of addiction treatment. Therapy, aka Psychotherapy and Counselling, helps patients develop coping skills that can help them to avoid relapse and has been shown to significantly improve the likelihood of long-term treatment success. Other therapeutic modalities of treatment are helpful in resolving ongoing, interpersonal struggles. Trauma Therapy, Grief Therapy, Anger Management, Stress Management, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, and Meditation, are important therapeutic techniques each recovering individual may use to gain insight and develop daily skills in the quest to live a healthy life.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Client feedback

"Hi Clive, I just wanted to drop you a text and say thank you. Since our last session, my dad and I have met up a number of times and I spent Father's Day with him too. I really don't think this would have happened without your help and so I just wanted to know how grateful I am"

"I feel as that you played a pivotal role in saving my life and I will always be very greatful to you for that"
