I am a counsellor and psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer with 15 years experience practicing in a wide range of settings and developing person centred approaches. Before this I practiced as a dental surgeon for 11 years mainly in the Community Dental Service and was unusual in applying a person centred approach to my practice. Before this, I mainly played the flute.
I aim to listen as whole being person and to bring all of my senses to the present moment during the time we are together and to be open to what spontaneously emerges between us.
My attempts to find meanings for my relational experiences have led me through explorations of different theories of human development, developmental psychology, emotional regulation theory (from the field of affective neuroscience and psychoanalytic theories) systems theory and feminist writing. My first attempt at writing in 2006 was an exploration of the concept of non-directivity in terms of chaos theory and conceiving therapy as organising at the edge of chaos. I have lectured and presented on affective neuroscience and psychotherapy, communicative musicality and offered workshops for practitioners to develop capacities in whole body listening.
I am currently exploring in relation to the emerging field of ecopsychology and am playing flutes again! I am working with Nick Totton on the Wild Pathways Training in Ecopsychology conceived by Nick, Mary-Jayne Rust and Chris Robertson and I am looking forward to engaging in a year of training on the Shamanic Medicine Wheel during 2014/15 with Jayne Johnson. I am writing a blog to accompany my explorations and developments in my practice.
I am active participant within the Independent Practioners Network and I believe in a responsible autonomous and accountable way of practicing.
I am associate member of the AHPP (Association of Humanistic Psychology Practitioners)
I am a member of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility
