My name is Claire Brown, I am a BACP accredited counsellor with many years experience. I work with individuals, couples, families, and groups.
I worked as a volunteer at Harrow Women's Centre for 17 years, over this time I helped with a range of issues including:
- relationship issues
- low self esteem
- eating disorders
The way I work
I work in private practice, I provide a safe space where my clients can explore their issues and find new ways forward.
My core orientation is person centred which is a non directive approach, the aim is to empower the individual to take control. I am also a trained CBT therapist. Based on the client's issues and an initial assessment, the approach will be determined, in collaboration with the client.
Working as a cognitive behavioural therapist, I aim to to focus on the particular ways in which individuals think, behave and act, in an attempt to deal successfully with their behavioural, emotional and social problems and issues. The Idea is to encourage and support the individual to think in more healthier and positive ways to achieve a happier and successful life, and to use this positivity to change negative behaviours and events.
First meeting set boundaries, establish commitment for the journey ahead, couple to listen, acknowledge and respond. Help couple to learn about themselves and each other.
Next ask couple to define their relationship vision this turns energy away from past and present disappointments towards a more hopeful future. Example each list a series of positive statements beginning with the word ‘we’ that describe the way they would like their relationship to be. The idea is to help them to become friends and helpmate allies not enemies.
My aim is to help the couple to artificially reconstruct the conditions of romantic love.
When 2 people treat each other the way they did in happier times, they begin to identify each other as a source of pleasure once again. With the anger towards each other out of the way they will be ready and more willing to take part in therapy.
