About me

A period of change can shake self-esteem, increase anxiety and decrease your ability to make decisions. At the same time change also creates an opportunity for reflection and re-evaluation, forcing us to think creatively about how best to move forward. Being listened to in a professional and confidential setting can be the first step to identifying obstacles and working out solutions. With more than 25 years experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I work compassionately and effectively with individuals and couples and can bring a fresh perspective to your situation. I support clients with a wide range of emotional and interpersonal problems and specialise in:

  • Relationship issues
  • Grief and loss
  • Life-changing illness
  • The challenges of adjusting to international relocation
  • Career and work issues

What to expect:

At your initial appointment I will want to learn about your personal history and what has brought you to therapy. I will also want to get an idea of how you have been handling the issue so far. This helps me assess how best to work with you and your particular concerns. Equally importantly, the first session is an opportunity for you to get a sense of me and how I work. Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust, so while you want to find someone with the right experience and qualifications, the fit between you and the therapist is hugely important too.

Training, qualifications & experience

Originally from Scotland, I spent 18 years living and working in the United States and Switzerland. I have a post-graduate degree (MSW) from the University of Michigan, which provided my training in psychotherapy and more recently I completed an MSc in Psychology. While living abroad, in addition to working with clients experiencing anxiety and depression, I developed particular expertise in cancer support, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, cultural adjustment and dual career concerns. Since 2004, when I returned to the UK, I have worked with Relate, headed the Family Support and Bereavement Team at Helen and Douglas House Hospice and served as Associate Director at SeeSaw, Oxfordshire's child bereavement charity. I am co-author of the book, Parents and Bereavement (Oxford University Press, 2012).   While living in Switzerland I spent four years seeing clients in private practice and I have been seeing clients in my Oxford practice since 2012. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and hold Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society (MBPsS).

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
