About me

In my experience the most effective ways to deal with emotional and psychological difficulties problems are to address the underlying causes.  This often involves understanding how you got to where you are now, including the impact others have had on you.  Finding ways of improving your relationships is also often central to being able to make changes and feeling more able to deal with the challenges you face.

I have worked over the last 26 years as a psychotherapist in the NHS and private practice, and as Head of Psychological Therapies at the Tuke Centre in The Retreat, York. I work with women and men as individuals, couples and in groups, with diverse backgrounds and needs.

You can contact me to arrange a brief phone call to talk about the kind of help you are looking for and to explain how I work.  We can then make an appointment for an initial meeting if you'd like to explore working with me.

At our initial meeting I will help you clarify what you want to deal with, and discuss ways of doing that. If I find I am not able to help I shall give you a recommendation for the kinds of therapy that are likely to suit you, and try to point you in an appropriate direction. If we both decide to continue working together we shall agree an initial number of sessions and review your progress as we go along.

I work with women and men as individuals, couples and groups.

I work from confidential consulting rooms in central Leeds with parking outside the door.

I have appointments early morning, in office hours and in the evening.

How to decide what help will suit you
I have worked as a psychotherapist and counsellor for many years, and also have run a service managing psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors, providing a very wide range of therapies for all sorts of difficulties, from the most specialist to the everyday. That means I am well placed to help you think about what is available and what might suit you. This is affected not only by the types of problems you are facing, but also what you are like as a person, and what has brought you to your present position. If I think I can help you I will; if I don't think I can help I will tell you so and point you somewhere that I think can.

I can also help you think about some options that are not so widely available, but very effective, such as joining an analytic group. This can seem like a daunting prospect, but given that so many emotional and psychological problems are connected to other people or affect other people, it makes very good sense to work in a group with other people to understand and deal with those problems. Group analysts specialise in helping people learn to work with others to address their difficulties, improve their relationships and experience greater security and satisfaction in their lives.
