Profile
Are you struggling with depression, addiction problems, mood or anger management, anxiety or low self esteem? Perhaps you are just looking for a safe and supportive place to talk. I have experience working with these and many other issues with my clients and I offer a sensitive and confidential service based in central Bristol.
I work using a person-centred non-directive approach; exploring and helping you achieve your goals. This mode of counselling concentrates on the now, creating a warm and non-judgemental space for you to experiment with the ways you may move forward. As an integrative counsellor I will also bring in elements from other areas of counselling as appropriate. Two further counselling approaches that I have found useful in the past and have received further training in are:
Solution Focused Brief Therapy - a present and future focused therapy which concentrates on your preferred future and the strengths and resources you already possess which will help you achieve it.
Motivational Interviewing - a therapeutic approach with a good evidence base for working with behaviour change including, but not limited to, smoking cessation and drug or alcohol use. Motivational interviewing works by helping you resolve your ambivalence towards the behaviour and then building your confidence around making your desired changes.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
I am an experienced counsellor, a graduate of the University of Bristol’s Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling, a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals. I am bound by their codes of ethics.
I have over seven years experience of keyworking vulnerable adults to help them make and carry through decisions and regain their independence. I also have extensive experience of working with problematic drug and alcohol use and addictions, helping individuals make informed decisions about their substance use and then apply any changes they have decided to make, I have additionally trained other professionals in recognising and working with clients with substance use problems.
I have an interest in mental health problems and also working with younger adults and those who feel socially excluded.
