I started my professional career as a nurse and then trained as a Health Visitor. As I became more interested in the psychological aspects of health, I studied psychology to degree level. I then started counselling training and worked in the area of sexual health. This included work with HIV/Aids. I decided to go self employed and worked with several G.P.practices and a workplace counselling service. I later managed this service across the U.K. I have also worked within an educational setting, worked with student counsellors and worked in agencies specialising in sexual abuse.
I have worked for a number of years as a counsellor/ psychotherapist and completed a psychotherapy training in 2001. The training was in an approach called Process Oriented Psychology. The underpinning of this approach is that the seeds for our growth and solution of problems is within the problem itself! This sometimes does not seem possible but it means that by working in this way we can truely find a solution that is right for us and not anyone else!
I really enjoy working with people whether this is on a particular issue for them or coaching them to achieve their maximum potential. I like to work in a time limited way or more long term. I am happy to see individuals and couples. I welcome any one from the LGBTI community.
In my personal life I love to dance, sing and am learning to play the violin at the moment. I also have a passion for classic cars!! I ran a restaurant for a number of years and surprisingly still enjoy cooking.
I believe that we all have the knowledge inside us to move on but may need help unfolding this. I am happy using various ways of working that may include talking, movement work, art work, the use of music etc. I also love to work with dreams.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a number of years therapy experience and have worked privately and within the NHS and counselling organisations.
My training includes an advanced diploma in counselling and an International diploma in Process Oriented Psychology. This is a psychotherapy training that includes individual, couple and group work. I have a Diploma in Couple Counselling from Relate.
I have also done coaching/mentoring training and training on diversity and difference.
I have trained as a counselling supervisor and have completed training on post traumatic stress disorder.
I have a background in nursing and am interested in and used to working with health issues.
At present I am particularly interested in working with couples, where one or the other has long term health conditions including dementia and individuals with dementia.
