About me

As an experienced and fully accredited therapist  I offer counselling to both individuals and couples in Cambridge. I have worked within the NHS, Private Practice and have extensive experience of working at the University of Cambridge with both students and staff.

As a qualified supervisor I offer clinical supervision of other counsellors, psychotherapists and mental health professionals. I work with individuals, dyads and groups and have a wealth of experience working with therapists during all stages of their careers including training.

I offer both short-term focused counselling and long-term therapy. My aim is through forging a strong and committed professional therapeutic relationship I help clients identify and explore issues and work on constructive ways of resolving patterns of responding accordingly.

I have a special interest in working with eating disorders, and have many years of experience working with clients struggling with disordered eating and other negative and compulsive coping mechanisms including alcohol and self-harm. I work both individually and with groups in this area.

I also have extensive experience working with survivors of sexual abuse and rape, as well as supervising those who also work clinically in this area.

I believe our early ways of responding to others and how we learn to manage our feelings lead us to develop patterns of relating to both our inner and outer world in a compromised manner. By exploring these, much greater insight and self-awareness are gained and relatively small changes in thinking and behaviour can lead to far-reaching positive consequences.

People approach therapy for a myriad of different reasons but the important starting point is that they recognise that they may be feeling 'stuck' and unable to resolve their troubles. My view is that counselling is like physiotherapy for the mind, and offers the unique opportunity to look at one's own situation (whether as an individual or as a couple) more objectively within a confidential and non-judgmental setting. It offers the space to explore issues, gain far deeper self-awareness and seek resolution resulting in the opportunity to move forwards more positively.

I have worked in private practice for the past ten years, but my experience is extremely broad having worked with the University of Cambridge since 2002, Cambridge Rape Crisis and also for the NHS. My 'specialism' is working with couples with relationship issues, whether they are separating or remaining together, using both therapy and/or my mediation training.

I have extensive experience offering focused therapy, working with Disordered Eating (including Anorexia, Bulimia, Body Dysmorphia, Compulsive and Binge-Eating) and also with survivors of psychological and physical abuse, sexual violence and rape, as well as supervising other therapists who work in this area.  I regularly work with anxiety and stress-related disorders, depression, work/study issues and addictive behaviours such as self-harm and alcohol abuse, both individually and with couples.

I designed and facilitated the Disordered Eating Group with the University Counselling Service, Cambridge for 5 years. I also ran both a postgraduate and undergraduate ongoing therapy groups for many years within the student service.

I offered numerous workshops and talks within the University of Cambridge covering topics such as Exam Stress, Time Management, 'How to Handle Your Supervisor', Self Esteem and Peer Support.

I was a tutor for a number of years on the year-long Supervision training course at the Institute of Group Analysis, London.

I have worked with and supervised at The Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre and SERICC (South Essex Rape and Incest Crisis Centre) for eight years.  I have designed and led various groups for survivors of Sexual Abuse and Rape and most recently a focused support group for Mothers of Young Survivors.

I co-ordinated the Peer Support scheme within the University of Cambridge for six years, training students in a 30-hour program focusing on effective communication, offering effective support, boundaries and crisis management. This role also included offering ongoing supervision and support of peer supporters through Reflective Practice groups and CPD events.

I am an active member of BACP (The British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) having chaired the Executive Committee of the BACP: Universities & Colleges Division 2012-2013, as well as chairing the Conference Committee 2010-2012.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
