About me

How Counselling Can Help:

You don't have to be alone with difficult feelings.  Having therapy can help you feel sturdier and calmer and more able to cope with difficulties and stressors. It can help you regain a sense of yourself, your voice, your unique strengths and your inner resources. I believe that by giving yourself some space and time to explore your difficulties, anxieties or losses with a caring professional you give yourself the chance to come to a deeper understanding of yourself  and your relationships. This, in turn, enables you to make more informed choices and find more balance, agency or acceptance. Therapy can help you feel less stressed and more in charge of yourself.

About Me:

As an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist I have been trained in a number of different therapy modalities, including emotional regulation, trauma, attachment and psychodynamic theory. This means I can adapt my way of working to what suits you and what you feel you need. I believe that compassion, collaboration and respect are at the heart of a healing therapeutic relationship. I won't judge you or tell you what you should or shouldn't do. I will listen to you and I will facilitate your listening to your own inner knowledge.

I practice mindfulness with clients if they are interested as I also believe that learning to listen to your body can help you regulate your emotions, help you understand what your mind sometimes cannot and ultimately empower you.

I offer a safe, calm, airy and welcoming work space, separate from my home, in the peaceful, semi-rural setting of Jordans village. The village is easily accessible from the A40/M40 or Seer Green train station and offers ample parking.

Timing of Sessions:

Each session will last 50 mins and is normally weekly at the same time every week so that this time is always yours. It is entirely up to you how long you come to therapy. Some people find the support they need in a few sessions. Other people like to come for longer. Short term work (6-20 sessions) can help you address a specific issue or simply offer some support in a time of crisis. Longer term work can lead to more profound changes and may be more appropriate for complex problems such as entrenched relationship issues, chronic depression, bereavement or compulsive behaviour.

Questions:

You can email or call me with any questions or for a 15 minute informal chat for which there is no charge. If you choose to make an initial appointment for an assessment session then we can then discuss your needs in greater depth and you can decide whether you think we are a good "fit" and I can make sure that I am the appropriate psychotherapist for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have been working in private practice for 13 years and have a lot of experience of working with relational trauma. I am also particularly interested in working with the transitions we all go through in life from leaving home for the first time, to having children, the empty nest, retirement etc. I work with adults and young people from 16 years of age and up. I trained at the Minster Centre in London, one of the oldest and most respected integrative training courses in the UK. I have an M.A. in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy from Middlesex University and also a Postgraduate Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I also have an M.A. in Psychology and Philosophy from Oxford University.  I have recently trained in EMDR therapy and now offer this as part of on going therapy or as a separate therapy.

I am a full clinical accredited member of the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy) and I am a registered member of the BACP ( British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and abide by their codes of ethics. I am also a registered member of the EMDR UK Association.

In addition to my private practice I am also a tutor at the Minster Centre where I facilitate experiential training groups of students training to become psychotherapists.  I have also worked at a GP's surgery and a low cost counselling service and have volunteered at SLAM ( South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust).

Alongside my private practice and my teaching I continue to add to my knowledge and experience by regularly attending additional training courses.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

I lived in the USA for 12 years. While I raised my children there I also worked with "at risk" mothers in a social program near Boston. These experiences led to my interest in parenting issues, relationship issues, transgenerational trauma and the challenges of living in a foreign country and repatriation. I also studied holistic health in the USA and this, along with my integrative training as a psychotherapist, means that I am always open to and curious about what our bodies remember and what our chronic illness or our bodily symptoms might be trying to communicate to us. Above all, however, I am interested and open to everyone's uniqueness and individual story.

My previous careers included Account Planning for advertising agencies in London and San Francisco and Campaign Co-ordination for an animal charity in the UK.

I have a friendly affectionate calm dog. He is happy to meet with you and/or sit with you in your sessions if you think that this may help you.
