90 Mycenae Road
I am a qualified and experienced counsellor working in South East London.
I work in a humanistic way as my core training is in person-centred counselling. This means that you set the agenda and I'll work with whatever issues and areas of your life you need to explore. I see my role as supporting you in identifying your strengths to support and develop the areas of your life that may need more focused attention and that may be stopping you from living a rich and fulfilling life. I appreciate that everyone has a different starting point and will do my best to meet you wherever yours is. It may be that your starting point is a need of support in coming to terms with loss - of loved ones, career, dreams, health, home, faith, self. Perhaps your starting point is a very specific goal you want to work towards. Or your starting point may even be wanting to work towards finding a goal or goals. It could be that you can't quite put your finger on what's not working for you in your life and that's where I would help you explore your situation. Everyone's different.
The thought of all this might inspire feelings ranging anything from hope to despair and sometimes it's difficult or embarrassing or frightening to talk about certain things. To help with this, I offer creative ways of working, including art work, gestalt exercises, creative visualisations, movement and voice work.
I have over five years' experience working with complex trauma and appreciate the many and varied symptoms and challenges it presents on a day-to-day and often moment-to-moment basis. The impact of a trauma can feel very frightening, isolating, lonely and lead to a lot of self-doubt and huge difficulties in making decisions. Often not having had enough support following an event that has been experienced as a trauma can be as traumatising, if not more so, than the initial traumatic event itself. In my work with you I focus on how you've been affected by what you've experienced, and understand that there are many and varied causes of trauma and work with you to find ways of coping that work for you.
Definitions and experiences of 'problems' can be as many and varied as definitions of 'success'. If you're experiencing difficulty in an area of your life, I will support you in taking your experience seriously, rather than dismissing it, because perhaps you think that in a wider social context it might not be considered a 'problem'. Everything is relative to our own unique personal experiences which shape how we view the world and what we then find easy or difficult.
My particular interests are Inner Critic and Inner Child work, which are very important in our creative processes, as we're all creative in different ways. Inner Critic work involves working with how we support or attack ourselves by exploring our inner dialogue. I've transformed my own Inner Critic through therapy, courses and creativity and appreciate what a rewarding experience this can be.
Ultimately, I hope for my clients to end our working alliance together trusting themselves and their inner resources to enable them to make the most of their lives. There's no routemap to the road to wholeness, as we all have unique needs and I'll work with you to explore what your options are in terms of getting those needs met.
I offer short and long-term work which we'll review together at regular intervals as you reach your goals and/or as your goals change, which sometimes happens, as we're all human and have the option to change our minds.
I am a member of the BACP. This organisation requires its members to adhere to high ethical standards which means you will be met by me with professionalism and fairness.
I am not taking on new clients at this time.
