About me

Why People Come For Therapy.

There are lots of reasons why someone may consider coming for counselling. It may be that they are trying to come to terms with a loss or bereavement or are finding it difficult  to cope with the stresses and demands of everyday life. It may be that feeling and emotions about events in their past are affecting how they are living in the present. In fact someone may not even know the reason but feel that they would benefit from talking to someone in a supportive and confidential environment.

Whatever your reason for considering counselling please note you are not alone. Recent statistics show that 1 in 4 of us will suffer from some form of mental illness during our life time. The talking therapies such as counselling and psychotherapy are recognised treatments in conditions such as depression.

About me and How I work.

I am a qualified psychotherapist and counsellor with a background of 25 years’ experience in nursing and midwifery. My approach is Humanistic and Integrative, meaning that whilst my work is based on Humanistic principles I also integrate theories from other approaches tailoring the work to each individual client's needs. The work I do with a client is as unique as the person themself.

I believe therapy can aid healing by providing a therapeutic relationship which is non-judgemental, authentic and based on trust.

I offer a safe space where I work with individuals on short or long term basis to help them explore their feelings and gain a greater understanding about issues they may be facing. This may involve looking at how they are feeling and behaving in the present but also may explore events and feelings from the past which may be affecting them today.

In addition to my work in private practice I have experience of working as a therapist within a G.P. setting, in an university counselling service and with a charity that provides counselling for survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

I have an enhanced DBS certificate, am in regular supervision and abide by the ethical framework of the B.A.C.P. and Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute.

Outdoor Therapy

I offer outdoor therapy for those who would prefer to meet in a natural space. Research shows that spending time in nature and natural spaces can have a calming effect on us.

By taking our therapy work outside we will explore your relationship with nature, how you feel both emotionally and physically when in a natural space and how, in turn,  this may help you as you explore the issues you are facing.

Outdoor therapy may take the form of 'walk and talk' or we may sit and spend time in a natural space.

In May 2022 I undertook training on Taking Therapy Outside with the Centre for Natural Reflection.

Currently I offer outdoor therapy in Ecclesall Woods. If you would like more information about outdoor therapy please get in touch.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
