Hi. My name’s Cat. I'm an Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.
I know that deciding to reach out and speak to a counsellor can be daunting; having received counselling and therapy myself as part of my training I know how it feels to be in the other chair.
First steps into any new arena are often difficult , but I’ll do everything I can to help you feel comfortable.
Training, qualifications & experience
My qualification as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor is with the Northern Guild for Psychotherapy; and I am registered with the BACP. I abide by both sets of ethical frameworks, and also hold an enhanced DBS certificate.
My work is grounded in a relational, person-centred approach. I focus very much on developing a warm, non-judgemental relationship while also utilising the analytical aspects of Transactional Analysis and the Psychodynamic Approach. Where appropriate, I have sometimes found it helpful and illuminating to incorporate a variety of creative media.
I am currently continuing my professional training in Psychotherapy, additionally specialising in working with children and young people.
I have a wide experience of working therapeutically with adults, children and young people who came to counselling for many different reasons, such as severe and mild depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, childhood or adulthood trauma or abuse, bereavement, social phobia, difficulties coping with anger, relationship issues, self-harming behaviours; clients who have faced homelessness, struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, struggled with attachment, have felt suicidal, are experiencing sexual difficulties, post traumatic stress disorder, and with ex offenders.
I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Education, from my previous career, working with vulnerable young people and adults often with mental health issues.
I currently work part-time at Sunderland Counselling Service and a primary school.
As a counsellor and play therapist I have worked in primary and secondary schools across the region, as well as for Your Homes Newcastle and the Youth Offending Service.

An initial 50 minute session will be at the reduced rate of £20 and this will be an opportunity for you to decide if you feel comfortable and if so, to arrange the practical details.
If you decide to go ahead the cost is £40 per session.
I do also operate a social pricing structure if you have a low income.
Our well-being is affected by many factors; sometimes there is clear cause for our discomfort, but sometimes the story begins in the distant past. Until now we have coped but a recent event has just tipped us over the edge and everything just feels overwhelming.
In addition to external events, everyone’s life story creates a unique way of thinking about the world which can often feel very lonely or confusing.
I do believe that we all have within us a perfect intuition designed to guide us on our best path through life. Imperfect external circumstances often prevent us from hearing it, or we hear it but don’t recognise or act on it. Initially there would have been good reasons for this; however, once we’re off the path, it’s much harder to find the way back. We can start going around in circles and feel a bit lost.
If you decide to work with me I will walk gently, attentively and respectfully at your side as you begin to retrace your steps and find your own way again. As your journey progresses, in the company of a non-judgemental other, your self-awareness will gradually heighten. The emotional healing process which comes with looking at things in this safe, confidential and supportive space frequently brings a sense of relief and frees you up to live more autonomously and joyously in the present.
