About me

I have over 20 years of experience working with sufferers of anxiety and depression and many other types of distress including some aspects of ADHD.

As well as counselling, psychotherapy and EMDR; I also provide 'Walking the Talking' which is a way of having your therapy sessions outdoors if you prefer. This is especially useful if you think you might feel 'trapped' in  a room with a therapist or someone you don't know well or are better at 'doing' things while talking. (See more information about these below.)

The Write Balance

The Write Balance is the name I give to my workshops where we use many writing techniques to express our thoughts and feelings on paper.  Check out my website for more information on this. I also run  Transformational Workshops offering practical techniques to use at home, at work as and when necessary. These are tried and trusted techniques derived from many therapies and are a cost-efficient alternative to one to one sessions.  Workshops are set-out as 6-10 week blocks however you can book into a 'one-off' slot if you feel this suits you more. Please ask for more details.

I also offer clinical supervision to student counsellors.

Counselling and Psychotherapy treatments combine many different ways of working to bring about positive change. It can enable you to see how you can be more in control of your life and either manage, reduce or eliminate symptoms resulting from your problems.

Counselling and psychotherapy sessions usually take place at my premises in Newcastle or we can do this while 'Walking the Talking'. * This is  walking while you are talking on a route that is agreed, suitable and planned in advance. (Daytime only during winter.)

EMDR [Eye Movement Desensitisation] is used to address many problems including those that are trauma-based. This is especially useful for people who are suffering from symptoms of anxiety such as panic attacks and abuse and-for those who have simply been 'stuck' for a while. EMDR can even be done while 'Walking the Talking'  (get in touch for more details.)

Give me a call to discuss your problem in confidence. Please allow up to 24 hours if you require a call-back.

Please Note: I cannot offer an emergency service and do not answer calls between 7pm and 8am. If you feel you cannot keep yourself safe; please either call your GP or dial 999 in an emergency or contact the Crisis Team on 0191 814, 8899 or the Samaritans on 0191 116, 123.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified in 2004 as a Therapeutic Counsellor and I am an Accredited Registered Member of BACP; MBACP (Accred) No. 093338.

I have trained to work with a variety of different presenting problems and worked in both private and GP's surgery settings; I also have experience in working with trauma. I am well-versed in offering counselling with the use of interpreters* please see my note about this below.

PG Dip in Psychotherapy, Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, EMDR Practitioner, Certificate in Counselling Supervision, Advanced Certificate in Supervision, Master Practitioner Diploma with the National Centre for Eating Disorders.

Therapeutic Writing Facilitator: Come to a workshop to use the power of the pen where you can work through your difficulties on paper under the guidance and support of a qualified counsellor and therapeutic writing facilitator. The techniques learned are great take-home and use coping mechanisms ideal for anxiety, depression and for some with ADHD/ ASD.

Walking the Talking Certificate: express your thoughts, feelings and problems while being nurtured by the outdoors. I have found this to be helpful for people who find it difficult to sit for a while ie clients with ADHD.

Level 2 BSL; If you are Deaf or hard of hearing you are all most welcome to attend with your own interpreter.*Unfortunately the use of interpreters for deaf clients or clients who are non-English speaking must be self-funded.

Please also Note: You must be over the age of 16 years to access my service. I cannot offer an emergency service and suggest that if you are unable to keep yourself safe then please contact your GP or 999 in an emergency.

Please call or send your enquiry to my website address below or via the counselling directory.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
