About us

Welcome.
We specialise in Body Psychotherapy.  Currently we can do that online or by phone.  We also have some limited possibilities for in person sessions.

Body Psychotherapy assumes a psychological difficulty is also a physical difficulty.

In the pandemic we are all experiencing change and this always creates anxiety.  Even if we choose changes they involve the loss of what we have known.  Novelty creates uncertainty.  Right now anxiety is the main therapeutic issue and is compounded by past stresses and strains and perhaps trauma.

If you are anxious, you are likely to having disturbances in thinking clearly, tight muscles, sleep disturbance, digestive problems and so on.  Being worried about a relative, a friend or a work colleague may be accompanied by tiredness, aches and pains and irritability.  Mind and body work together.

Body psychotherapy pays attention to the body and the ways the body tells us about our difficulties. We work with the physical signs of distress through "listening" non verbally to these communications alongside talking through difficulties. We take a whole view of someone and tackle problems from different angles. We aim to get to the source of difficulties, which often lies in the past in our childhood relationships.

We think firstly of you as a human being and can work with a wide range of difficulties and issues. We do not think of you just as your problem such as depression. We like to get to know your experience of your problem and what seems to help you, and what worsens things. In this way, we hope to mobilise your own capacities to take charge of, and heal yourself within a therapeutic relationship.

Training, qualifications & experience

We are an experienced group of body psychotherapists.  We celebrated our 30th anniversary in 2019.  We are UKCP registered as individuals, and the centre is an organisational member of UKCP offering training and accreditation.  Some of us are also members of the European Association for Body Psychotherapy (EABP) and the centre is an organisational member of EABP.

Body psychotherapy is well equipped to work with trauma and some of us have completed additional training with Babette Rothschild in Somatic Trauma Therapy, and Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine). Some of us are also trained in meditation, including mindfulness.

We also have trainee psychotherapists available for lower cost psychotherapy - when applicable.

Our training programme in body psychotherapy leads to a future career as a body psychotherapist.  A key textbook is "Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication in Psychotherapy" by Gill Westland (Norton, 2015).

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.

Other areas of counselling we deal with

Psychological aspects of long term illness.
Search for meaning in life.
Blocked creativity.

We have asked for this site to list "Body Psychotherapy" with no success - see below.  We are baffled.  Body Psychotherapy is widely recognised globally with international professional associations and journals e.g. Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy published by Taylor and Francis.  A body based approach is widely recognised as necessary for the treatment of trauma - see for example Bessel van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score.
