About me

I am a BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behaviour Therapist and EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner and during assessment work with my client to decide how we might address what is getting in the way of balance and contented living.

I strive to provide only what would be good enough for my own children or loved ones, were they to be on the receiving end! I am an evidence-based practitioner who attends regular courses and receives excellent clinical supervision from Accredited and Consultant practitioners in order to continue to offer first class therapy to adults, children and young people.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing or both?

These are interventions recommended by the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE), and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a collaborative intervention which requires you to work between sessions to collect evidence of what happens when you think or behave in a particular way. You might be asked to record in diary form what has happened with regard to the issue we are working to address.
Often described as a talking therapy, CBT is more accurately a talking and doing (behavioural) therapy. Together the therapist and the client design behavioural experiments which you would put into practice between sessions, and changes can be measured so it can be readily seen how therapy is working. See https://www.babcp.com/public/what-is-cbt.aspx for further information.

Sometimes a person may ask for help when he or she has experienced events they do not want to talk out loud about. Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) does not require you to go into detail; it is possible to process disturbing memories without having to discuss distressing aspects of the past. EMDR is effective in addressing emotional stuck points as well as major traumas and may produce results more rapidly than other forms of therapy. My work is predominantly EMDR-based, as my clients and I find it so productive. See https://emdrassociation.org.uk/a-unique-and-powerful-therapy/ to find out more.

Feel free to get in touch with me to discuss whether EMDR or CBT may be of help.
Should you invite me to work with you, I would encourage you to ask questions to make sure you are as happy with the intervention as possible. My hope is for every client to leave every session glad they came.

I have worked in the field of psychological health since 1982, successfully providing therapy to children, young people, adults and families. I have extensive experience of addressing mental health difficulties at every level of complexity in inpatient and outpatient NHS settings, and in the independent sector. I work with case managers and related professionals; I am qualified to teach and supervise others in my speciality.

My current work is predominantly with those who experience depression, severe anxiety or worry. These may be a consequence of developmental trauma, cumulative life experiences or a single incident. They may present as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, panic, phobias, or post-traumatic stress.

Amongst many other presentations, I see those with disordered eating, low self-esteem and the horrible consequences of shame. I address medically unexplained symptoms, the psychological effects of physical illnesses and prolonged grief.

I am skilled in working with parents alone or with their children, using Systemic CBT.

Do ask for evidence of my experience with whatever issue you would like help with.

Further information

It is my pleasure to work hard with my client to better understand what is resulting in distress or difficulty. I will then share what evidence suggests might help, and use what I have been so well taught and practised to enable my client to recover from adverse life experiences or manage what is in her or his life to greater satisfaction.

My aim is to do this in as few sessions as is possible, again, treating others as I would wish to be treated myself.

No problem is too small or too big to address.
