About me

I am trained in a number of approaches but first and foremost I begin with a person centred approach. This means I will listen to you and together we can build a way of working that suits you best.

I am here to hear how things are from your point of view. Counselling offers an opportunity to explore what matters at the heart of your life with an experienced professional in a quiet, confidential setting.

Counselling can give you the opportunity to discover ways to make changes that are meaningful in your life. Taking time to sort through your feelings in a patient, non-judgemental environment can really reduce stress and worry and lead to ‘breakthroughs’ in those areas of life which can feel particularly ‘stuck’ or ‘gloomy’. It's my job to support you to do this.

The world of therapy includes various approaches to life’s problems and some of the specialist training routes I have followed offer ways of working with particular dilemmas, such as relationships. If you are interested in peeling back the layers of a problem and looking in depth at how issues from the past may have affected how you feel in certain situations in your life now, we can.

I also have experience working creatively. Sometimes words are difficult and we can bring art materials into the therapy room if you would be interested in working in this way- just ask me when you arrange your appointment. I did a fine art degree before I trained as a counsellor and have completed further training in working creatively in counselling since I qualified as a therapist.

Ultimately, I set out to offer a safe and understanding environment where I will support you to take your time to explore and untangle the sources of confusion and pain in your life. We can have as many or as few sessions as you wish- you decide.

Before training as a therapist I had experience working in a number of roles in mental health, education and social care. Previously I have managed a community outreach service, run therapeutic art and play workshops for children experiencing learning difficulties along the autistic spectrum, and managed a complementary therapy centre. I have been practicing as a counsellor for fourteen years, ten of these running my own business as a counsellor in private practice.

I worked as a counsellor at Leeds Beckett University Counselling Service from 2008-12 before setting up my own practice, so I have lots of experience working with students and the particular difficulties of student life and I have continued to develop this specialism. I am a member of the BACP Counselling in Universities and Higher Education division and am on the Approved Therapists Network for working with counsellors in training at Leeds Beckett University.

I am an Accredited Registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. I was awarded Accredited status in 2018.  Accredited status is a badge of endorsement this professional body offers to recognise a significant amount of post qualification experience and a high standard of work based on a portfolio of continued professional development.

I offer clinical supervision for therapists and other professionals using person centred, relational, creative and integrative models.

Creative Supervision Group

For more than five years I have organised a monthly Creative Peer Supervision Group from the Heart Centre in Headingley.  The group is popular with Art therapists and Counsellors who are interested in using creative materials and processes for self exploration. If you are a qualified counsellor or art therapist and would be interested in joining us do get in touch. We welcome new members and offer a friendly space to build confidence in working creatively.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
