Training, qualifications & experience

About me
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, Chartered Scientist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS). I am also a registered Psychotherapist with UKCP, a member of FDAP (Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals) and AED (Academy for Eating Disorders). I am a member of the BPS Faculty of Addictions and a member of the Division of Counselling Psychology. As a psychologist, I also hold a practicing certificate with the British Psychological Society and am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Training and experience
I initially read a BA in Fine Art degree with Psychology as an addtional major before I completed my undergraduate psychology training in South Africa. This then followed with more specialist post graduate psychology and psychotherapy training in the UK. Thus, I have spent a total of 9 years training in counselling and psychological therapy. After training in a private forensic medium secure hospital, I then spent some time working within the non statutory sector in addictions. Following this, I worked with the large team of counselling and clinical psychologists in the field of addictions at the world-renowned South London & Maudsley NHS Trust in London. After many years working therapeutically with complex and multi-facetted presentations within addictions, I then added the further speciality of working with eating disorders. Again, I worked in partnership with leading experts within this field at Maudsley Hospital, many of whom are at the forefront of cutting edge research in this area. Following a demand for increased flexibility and increasing access to therapy and counselling, I then decided to end my work within the NHS and launch into private practice.

Thus, my extensive experience in clinical areas such as eating disorders, addictions, forensic and mental health settings has lasted 12 years. I therefore have provided psychological therapy in both NHS and non statutory settings and have experience working in community and inpatient settings, consisting of individual, family and group work. I have developed and delivered group-based psychological teaching/training programmes as well as training practitioners in advanced counselling skills. In addition, I have led training sessions on the Clinical Psychology Doctorate at Canterbury University and examined the work of MSc students on training courses provided by Kings College University.  I have also coordinated and led on an online NHS CBT programme for people experiencing eating difficulties.

In addition to having a specialist interest in eating disorders and addiction, I work with anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), self harm, relationship issues, phobias, managing stress and emotional distress, self esteem and general counselling and psychological therapy. I am available for assessment and court reports.

Through my integrative training, I design bespoke clinical interventions tailored to the needs and concerns of the individual. In addition, I am also a member of the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA) and follow its philosophy which diverges from pathologising individuals to, instead, focusing on their levels of resilience, their strengths and the virtues which allow them to thrive. Thus, my therapeutic approach which encompasses both psychological and therapeutic treatment models, respects the personhood of the individual patient, offering a way of working relationally, honouring the integrity of both client and therapist.
