About me

The World is shifting beneath our feet - a new normal perhaps - and we have no previous experience to guide us. There may be many reasons why you are visiting the Directory now:  seeking support after these last particularly difficult years when new anxieties come to the surface and our grip on reality loosens;  or looking to make sense of what’s going on with yourself and your ability to cope which can make us feel uncertain and unsure of who we are.

When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves -

This quotation from the amazing Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor, is always relevant, no matter what situation you may find yourself in.  Priorities change, and with them ourselves - you are more likely to be in survival mode than thinking about counselling.  We may wobble, lose balance, sometimes literally.

However, if you would like to talk to someone now, perhaps about specific techniques for adapting to a different way of life as we emerge from one challenge into another, or just to talk, please call me on 07505 995028 to see how I can help you, either now or in the future.

Below you can find some more information about me if this helps you decide whether or not to get in touch. If you would like to know more about how I work, please visit my website at www.southfieldstherapy.co.uk.  And thank you for reading my profile.

I work with adults and young people in a confidential and welcoming environment. My approach is an integrative one which means that I draw on different counselling theories and approaches to suit individual needs because we are all different. Your goals will be my goals; we will work together to achieve them.

Along with other therapists I believe that the key to successful therapy is the relationship between therapist and client; it is important for you to feel comfortable and safe. For that reason we can have an initial meeting to decide whether you would like to work with me. Approaching a counsellor can be pretty daunting and I will do my best to put you at ease, providing a non-judgemental space - a sounding board for unspoken thoughts maybe, or just a place to explore what is going on for you at this moment. If you prefer, you can also call me first for an informal chat and I will be happy to answer any concerns or questions.

Training, qualifications & experience

Qualifications

  • Certificate in Counselling Skills (CPCAB); Certificate in Counselling Studies (CPCAB); BA, Sociology & Education, (OU); MSc (Hons), Distinction in Therapeutic Counselling, Greenwich University (BACP).
  • As a Registered Member, MBACP, of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy I adhere to their Ethical Framework for good practice and am committed to ongoing professional development to keep my skills and knowledge up to date.

Training and CPD in the last 18 months includes: Relational mindfulness; Working with trauma; Family dynamics and traumatic bonding; Attachment theory; Attachment and character strategies; Understanding and recognising the impact of domestic violence; Neuroscience in therapy; Existential counselling; The false self; Couples counselling; Working systemically with individuals; Use of self in the therapeutic encounter; The impact of child sexual abuse on adult survivors; Reducing conflict in relationships; Eating disorders.

Experience

My counselling experience includes: working with teenagers who have low self esteem; counselling women who suffer domestic abuse and trauma; helping people overcome depression and anxiety. I have also worked successfully with young adults on the autistic spectrum and with teenagers and adults who self harm, including eating disorders. Bereavement and loss have also been a large part of my work with clients in recent years and I am currently supporting clients experiencing panic attacks and generalised anxiety.

My first degree was in Sociology and Education and I have a strong interest in the context of people's lives -  family, friends, work environment - all of which have a bearing on how we are in the world and how we relate to one another. I have been practising since 2010 and, as well as my private practice, I worked for many years in the Youth Service of a local community counselling agency, and for a women's centre in Surrey, offering both short and long term counselling.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

  • Being too much in our head and ignoring what our heart tells us; seeking a sense of belonging
  • wanting to be ourselves but scared of not conforming or of not fitting in, constantly wondering 'what is normal?'
  • beating ourselves up with that inner highly critical voice; lacking self-worth, feeling guilty and ashamed
  • I am also interested in transition stages - from teen to adult, young adults unsure of maturity, ageing and retirement issues.
