I have been a qualified counsellor for over 25 years now and draw on a wide range of knowledge and experience to help you to grow in confidence with addressing the problems you're facing. When you make the decision to come for counselling you are choosing to put aside time for yourself to explore what is troubling you without being judged, safely and with confidence.
My supporting you in this way will help you to find greater clarity, so that you can make any changes that you see would be beneficial. Spending time like this will also help you to become more at ease with yourself and the feelings that are challenging you right now.
Choosing a Counsellor can be daunting and may feel like yet another problem that you have to face. Recognising the courage that this takes, particularly if you are feeling vulnerable, is the first step.
Whether you are seeking help with relationship problems, anxiety, generalised anxiety, depression or any other issues, together with my support, we can find a way to help you to move forward. I am also a teacher of Mindfulness and Self Compassion and have found that combining this approach with Counselling is highly beneficial. Practicing Mindfulness and Self Compassion is scientifially proven to reduce stress and increase a sense of wellbeing, so this can contribute greatly to the counselling process. It will be entirely up to you whether you would like me to teach you how to incorporate some of these skills into your life or not, . Many clients find that using the meditations on my website, in between sessions, helps them to feel calmer and more in control. Watching clients change and grow in confidence as the Counselling progresses is my main motivation for being a Counsellor.
How I work
I work from my office in Oving, a village east of Chichester with easy access on the ground floor and offer both daytime and evening sessions. I came to Counselling over thirty years ago, discovering that my childhood and teenage years were affected by generalised anxiety. The journey towards a calm way of being began then and developed through counselling, training and a mindful approach to life. I work from a place of peace and stability within myself to help bring understanding and a sense of empowerment, peace and stability to you, my client
I use a variety of therapeutic models according to each person’s individual need. Some of the models I incorporate are: Person Centred, CBT techniques, Radical Acceptance, Psychodynamic,Gestalt and Mindfulness. All issues are approached by me with care, respect and confidentiality.
Please feel free to contact me under no obligation and we can talk on the phone or by email. The first session is to establish whether we both feel suited to continue together. All sessions are for the traditional 50 minutes and the fee is £45 per session. Concessions are available so please do ask. For additional help with your decision to contact me, there are a couple of testimonials in the 'further information' section below.

A testimonial from Joe:
A few years ago I experienced a perfect storm of problems in my working life. I was father of two very young children trying hard to be a supportive husband and provider and my business went completely bust in a matter of weeks. It was every catastrophe I had ever feared all coming at once.
Months earlier, I had decided to start seeing Barbara for Counselling to try to address a range of issues mostly to do with my anxiety and anger in reaction to apparently fairly simple adversities in life. Barbara’s sessions were simple, clear and calm. She helped me explore the issues I was being challenged by in a manner which made understanding seem elementary. I came away from each session feeling, lighter, clearer and more capable of facing what had loomed unfathomably large.
Then I lost all my work and faced my worst fears. Everything that could go wrong – barring illness or death – did go wrong and yet, with Barbara’s wonderful calm approach, I was able to see that the worst was really very manageable.
Barbara introduced simple breathing and meditation exercises, as part of session that can be used anywhere at any time to find personal, private space to deal with anything that challenges you. These are a tremendous benefit which I still use regularly. Her approach is grounded and no-nonsense and leaves you with a great context to tackle the day-to-day issues which assault us all.
She was a life-saver in a difficult time but the legacy of my months of Counselling with her lives on years later and the techniques we explored remain in use daily.
I’d recommend her without hesitation.
A testimonial from Victoria:
Barbara is a lovely, compassionate, gentle and non-judgemental person who helped me lift the curtain of my depression away in our counselling sessions, teaching me various very helpful tools for dealing with my depression. Barbara also helped me to learn to love myself, which opened up my life and allowed me to believe I deserved good things.
