About me

I am an attachment based psychoanalytic psychotherapist practicing in Crouch End & Muswell Hill. Beginning with a free 'getting to know you' session I offer a warm, pragmatic, open and human approach to both individuals and couples and have twenty years experience working with a wide range of clinical issues, including depression and anxiety and generalised anxiety disorders.

I draw on a range of approaches which means I adapt the way I work to suit you and your particular problem and stage of life. As a teacher I work at the Bowlby Centre and the College of North East London lecturing on childhood abuse trauma and dissociation, and person centred and attachment based psychodynamic counselling.I am registered with the UKCP [United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists] and a fully accredited member of the BACP [British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists]. I provide clinical supervision to qualified counsellors and psychotherapists and students in training.

Training, qualifications & experience

After a lengthy involvement with humanistic approaches I trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy in 1997, followed by a further degree in transpersonal approaches, and a professional involvement in the International and European Societies for the study of trauma and dissociation. I am particularly interested in working with depression, dissociation, generalised anxiety disorder, and intimacy and relationship problems. Sometimes these are related to childhood sexual or physical abuse, alternatively they may be connected to an emotionally absent father, a depressed mother or simply to caretaking miss-attunements in the early years, even by otherwise loving parents.

Other consequences of sub-optimal childhood experiences can include: a fragile sense of self and meaning of life issues; recurrent feelings of lonelyness; emotional numbness; a sense of being different to others; a sense of being on the outside of life looking in; a sense of there being something wrong but can’t work out what it is; uncertainty about ones interests and talents; feelings of suppressed shame and/or guilt; difficulties being angry; experience of strong feelings or no feelings, but no middle ground; tendency to feel that when you do express yourself you come across as childish; a fear of being seen or thought of as selfish; a tendency to feel others are more grown up than you; experience of difficulty keeping “normal” conversations going; a tendency to put others needs before your own; difficulties initiating friendships; experience of people coming to you for practical advice but not emotiomal support; a sense of being a fake; a dislike of feeling needy; frequently being uncertain what you feel, or understanding what others feel; difficulties with authority and deadlines, sometimes even those imposed by yourself. Many or just some of these experiences can be indicative of inner wounds unresolved and in need of repair, and unmet emotional needs requiring recognition, empathy and understanding to become the emotional resources necessary for a fully functioning adult life.

In addition to a private practice in North London working with individuals and couples, I lecture on childhood abuse trauma and dissociation, and psychodynamic and person centred counselling, in a variety of settings including the Bowlby Centre and the College of North East London. I am clinical director of Counselling Initiatives which provides low cost open-ended counselling in the community, and I work with addictions through my involvement with the Sporting Chance Clinic where I run the equine psychotherapy program.

I am a member of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy [IARPP] and the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies [ESTSS]. I am currently undertaking doctoral research on complex post traumatic stress arising from attachment trauma in childhood.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I am interested in attachment issues, early childhood trauma, mindfulness and recent neuroscience and include both in my understanding of human development, disorder and change. If appropriate I will talk through and encourage the use of relational change and self support practices outside sessions, emphasising the role of focused attention in identifying and releasing emotional distress and unresolved traumas, and exploring new aspects and configurations of self.

Further information

I offer short to medium term supportive/explorative or solution focused counselling for current problems or distress including bereavement, unemployment, stage-of-life issues, recovery from addictions, relationships, depression, anxiety states. For deeper more intractable issues I offer open ended attachment based psychodynamic psychotherapy. In both cases I draw on a wide range of traditions including psychoanalytic, attachment, humanistic, existential, Jungian, Schema and Trauma/Dissociation based therapies.

In addition to the main therapeutic approaches, when appropriate I work with the inner child who can be carrying complex post traumatic stress arising from adversity in early childhood. Separable from overt neglect or physical or sexual abuse - though often an accompaniment, this type of stress can arise from trauma in a lower key that children have had to 'get over' in their own way. For example divorce, death of a loved one, long term illness or infidelity of a parent; or simply the cumulative effects of harshness or general lack of empathy or support within the family.

If you would like to phone or email me we can arrange an initial conversation at no cost to give you space to reflect on current issues, consider how you might go forward, and for us to meet each other. After our first meeting we can decide on further sessions, or you might like to go away and think about this experience before coming to a decision.

Having decided on a course of counselling, sessions are usually arranged at weekly intervals and last for 50 minutes.

I work in either in Crouch End or Muswell Hill, North London.

You can phone me on 07889 161634 or email me at tonysabey@btinternet.com
