About me

The decision to seek counselling is not an easy one. Many of us will go through a time in our life when we will feel unsure how to make sense of what is happening to us. We may feel burdened by events in our childhood. We may struggle with ill health. The world of work can be stressful and demanding. There may be conflict in relationships or we may simply feel a deep unhappiness.

Sometimes just speaking with friends and family, or simply the passing of time itself is enough to help us find our way again. When that does not work, it can help to speak to a professionally trained counsellor or psychotherapist, someone who will not judge you or try to impose solutions but will help you find your own way forward. As an experienced counsellor I can offer help for a wide range of problems in a safe and confidential setting.

Confidentiality and trust are at the heart of a counselling relationship. As a relative newcomer to Suffolk, I am aware that this can be a particular concern in small communities where everyone knows everyone.

Since COVID-19 entered our world, we have all had to make major adjustments to try to keep ourselves and others safe.

When lockdown came the world of counselling moved to telephone or online sessions in order to keep services available and this remains an option.

However, nothing quite replaces being in the same room with another person.

My Practise
I am trained as a Psychodynamic Counsellor, although I am familiar with other approaches such as CBT.

If you are not familiar with different counselling approaches, the Counselling Directory provides good definitions. If you ask yourself questions such as:

“Why am I like this?”
“Does this stem from my childhood experiences?”
“Why do I feel so frightened or angry all the time?”

Then Psychodynamic Counselling is likely to be the right approach for you.

Over a long career as a health professional and counsellor, I have worked to help many with issues such as building confidence, coping with loss, managing emotions, particularly anxiety and anger and improving relationships – difficulties that sometimes go back to childhood experiences.

I believe in working with the whole person. We cannot separate mind and body. Anxiety, depression or long-term unhappiness impact us physically over time. We understand that illness is aggravated by mental conflict and stress and that long-term stress can cause a variety of physical problems. We may find it hard to take care of ourselves properly. Maybe you are someone who puts everyone else first.

I have particular experience in working with people who have health problems or disability or those who are caring for someone who is unwell. I have experience working with people with a range of conditions such as:-
Arthritis; Chronic Fatigue Syndrome;  Chronic back pain;   Other long-term conditions such as  Medically unexplained symptoms; and, Fibromyalgia

Often, understanding ourselves and our difficulties can take time and sessions are usually open-ended for as long as you need them. However, time-limited sessions are also available to help you improve your coping strategies and learn stress-management techniques.

I am committed to working with adults of all ages, abilities, cultures, religious beliefs or LGBTQ.

I also provide supervision for counselling trainees or mental health professionals.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Supervision

I offer supervision to qualified counsellors, trainees and health and social care professionals from a psycho-dynamic perspective.

Our feelings about our clients will inevitably affect us.  There will be those clients with whom we feel the greatest sympathy, and those who we find extremely challenging.  How do we understand the different feeling evoked and how do we ensure we treat both equally?

Our clients may come to us in great distress caused by a variety of problems.  At other times they may be angry, depressed, experience great loss or trauma.  The impact of these emotions may stay with us causing stress, illness, loss of confidence, sleepless nights or impact our family life and other relationships.

The regular time and space to reflect on these experiences with an experienced supervisor will allow us to process these experiences in a healthy way, to think, explore, hypothesise and understand, allowing us to remain effective in our work and to feel secure in our skills and professional in our practice.
