Profile

I am person centred counsellor offering a confidential, comfortable and safe relationship in which you may explore difficult, painful issues in your life and find ways of moving forward. I also draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy skills. There are times when your experiences are overwhelming and it can seem diificult to make sense of them. With compassion and sensitivity I will help you to do so.

My nursing career spanned some 37 years. I found my niche in the Hospice world, initially as a Macmillan Nurse after working as a District Nurse for a few years, and for the last 19 years I was the Director of Nursing for a local Hospice. I found this role enourmously rewarding and a privileged one to hold. I was awarded an MBE for services to nursing.

However, I missed the close contact that I had enjoyed as a Macmillan nurse many years ago and decided that my second career would take me back into a situation where I could work closely again with people in distress. I was fortunate to be able to commence training as a counsellor at Chester University and subsequently after qualifying continued to work voluntarily as a counsellor for the Hamar Centre at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

This background, of being with and helping people who are experiencing difficulties and distress in their lives enables me to feel comfortable in situations where emotions may feel overwhelming to an individual. In particular, forms of loss, e.g bereavement or health and well being due to serious illness are familiar to me.

More personally I have adopted young boys, faced the challenge of raising them, one with Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity and known the pain of multiple bereavement. I believe these experiences enhance my ability to empathise and support you as you face your own particular difficulties.

I currently work in the NHS part time as a Fertility Counsellor, counselling is available as part of the treatment offered but if you cannot make the sessions on the days available or would like longer term support I may be able to help. Please see below for further information.

Further Information

Infertility

Infertility can be a devasting experience affecting not only the woman concerned but her partner and wider family. Whether having ongoing treatment or trying to decide whether to continue with treatment or bring it to an end, it can be helpful to explore the options with someone not intimately involved.

Location

My counselling room is within 30 minutes by car from Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Newtown, 50 minutes from Telford. My counselling room is a comfortable and peaceful space.  There is ample parking but unfortunately the walk from the nearest bus stop is half a mile uphill!! Tanat Valley Buses Service X75, which runs from Llanidloes to Shrewsbury via the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, does stop at the bottom of the lane.
