About me

I'm a Client-Centred counsellor, psychotherapist, supervisor, coach, equine assisted therapist and online business mentor.

I feel passionate about people's right to emotional and psychological recovery and wellness. I believe we all want and need unconditional love, positive regard and respect, we all want empathy, a genuine, congruent relationship, and unconditional acceptance, whether or not we have serious problems or crises.

I have been in private practice for over 28 years. I mainly work with anxiety, depression, relationship issues including narcissistic abuse (which includes emotional abuse and bullying), affairs and betrayals, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), panic, eating disorders, separation and divorce, bereavement, low self-esteem, sexual abuse (current and historic), LGBTQ+ sexuality issues, including impact of prejudice and discrimination (my pronouns are she/her).

I also specialise in personal development, therapeutic personal and professional coaching, and online affiliate and attraction marketing business and leadership coaching.

We often want someone to listen without judging or taking over and telling us what to do, what to think, how to be. Some of us worry that talking to friends or family will burden them unreasonably with our worries, concerns and anxieties.

Therefore we need time, freedom and a good, active listener to explore our problems and be trusted to discover our own solutions and strategies, to notice what feels right to do, or where to go next. Talking things through with a trained, qualified and experienced therapist can be useful to get clarification or resolution. I also offer other (inexpensive or free) resources which can speed up your therapeutic process and save you time and money in therapy.

I recently added equine assisted therapy and coaching to what I do because 70% of our body language is out of awareness. More often than not, so are our attitude and beliefs about ourselves and others, and how we show up in our relationships; our intention, willpower, assertiveness and even our boundaries (or lack thereof) are communicated via body language.

Horses see this because they are prey animals. Millions of years of evolution, developing survival skills and their instincts, have resulted in creatures able to instantly see and feel what we know, and what we don’t know.  As prey animals they have only four items in their hierarchy of needs; safety, comfort, play and incentive (or food).  As the ultimate predators, humans have many more (some are real needs, others are only invented or assumed).  We have an ego (or a vast set of conditions of worth), which often gets in the way of our relationships with other humans, and with other animals. Horses have no ego.  Therefore, any feedback we get from them is based solely on whether or not, and which one of the four items in their hierarchy of needs (safety, comfort, play and food) we are attempting to meet, or deny.

Over the last 17 years I have been learning the principles and concepts of natural horsemanship (Parelli US), which means learning about, and communicating via understanding the nature of the horse; understanding their psychology and communication styles based on their particular psychological profile (introvert v extrovert, left v right brain genetic characteristics).

Believe it or not, humans have the same genetic profile range as horses, which is one of the many reasons horses are so therapeutic for us; they are good teachers of new ways of relating to ourselves and others: e.g how to be patient with ourselves and others; how to develop unconditional positive regard for ourselves and others; to see ourselves as horses see us, as our own best partner in life.

If you would like to know more, or have an initial session to see if this way of working might be for you, I offer up to 30 minutes, pro bono, by phone or an online video platform.

My online business is affiliate marketing with a 50 year old Japanese company that sells hight ticket (commission) medical grade items for domestic use; these are health related and highly conservation-conscious innovations.   The business offers the opportunity to gain time, location and especially financial freedom in a way that no other online business does (their commission structure is patented so can't be copied, it's that good!).

I went into this online business because it is a natural progression for my clients from counselling, psychotherapy and coaching in that it is 80% ongoing, never-ending personal and professional development.

It offers a way out of soul-destroying jobs and lifestyles that inhibit, or prohibit clients from achieving their full potential, or building towards living their best life as a "new, evolving you".

Supervision:    In my supervision of other counsellors and psychotherapists I feel passionate about working to the same ethos and values with which I work with clients. I feel strongly that it's vital to hold a non-judgemental, empathic and genuine attitude towards supervises, such that they feel free and safe to bring all their developmental issues to supervision, without any fear of criticism. My aim is to help supervises unpick what is working well and what is not, and get clear about why, and to help them keep track with their chosen approach, philosophically, theoretically and hence practically.

I am an External Examiner for Metanoia Institute's and Brighton University and University of East London counselling and Humanitarian Intervention (respectively) degrees and MSc.s.

I believe in and adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice, and I am a Registered and Accredited Member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (MBACP) and the World Association for Person-Centred and Experiential Psychotherapy and Counselling (WAPCEPC).

I work in Towcester, Northamptonshire, face to face, FaceTime, Zoom, Google Duo, or Skype, or any other portal you prefer.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a BA (Hons), an MA and a Diploma in Counselling, as well as a Diploma in Supervision. I’ve two Masters, on from the University of Kent at Canterbury, the other from University of East London. I trained in counselling a psychotherapy at Metanoia Institute in London where I am now an external examiner. I gained my Diploma in Supervision from the Institute for Person-Centred Learning.

For the last 15 years I have been training and practicing Natural Horsemanship and Humanality; a theory of personality, psychology and body language which helps us understand ourselves (and horses) and others and gives us confidence and insight into what is natural and positive about ourselves, including how to communicate more effectively and successfully with people who are different from us, along with a better understanding of those whose behaviour might be at least mystifying, at worst, downright exasperating! I have had considerable success using the Humanality Report as a personal development tool for clients, supervisees and coachees.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Identity and personality, or Humanality characteristics using a model of personality which takes account of introvert/extrovert, left-brain/right-brain innate characteristics to help us understand ourselves and others. I focus on positive attributes to enhance self-development and avoid overuse of those attributes that leave us burnt out and distressed, and ways of communicating more effectively so as to get the best out of others and make the best of ourselves.

FAQs Will you be talking to anyone about me? Everything you tell me in therapy will be strictly confidential with very few legal and ethical exceptions.

I talk about my work with a qualified, professional supervisor but I would not talk about any identifying facts about you; the focus of supervision is on continually improving my way of working, not on my clients' business.

How long will I have to come for? There is no set number of sessions for which you would be expected to come; that will be entirely up to you.

Will I have to come every week? In the beginning stages of counselling most people find that coming every week for 6-8 weeks is helpful to get going. Then you are more likely to know what frequency might work best for you; after then you can always adjust frequency if you think you need more or less.

What about cancellations, will I have to pay for those? So long as you give 48 hours notice of a cancellation you won't have to pay for the missed session.
