Individual and Couples Counselling
The aim of counselling is to help you to find balance and to be able to regain it when it is lost.
You may have had no previous experience of counselling and there are perhaps several reasons why you have decided to approach a counsellor. It may be that you wish to resolve something which is troubling you or you may be undergoing some kind of emotional crisis or trauma. It may simply be that you wish to enhance your emotional well-being.
Counselling will give you the opportunity to explore your concerns without feeling judged and may lead to a clearer understanding of your difficulties. These new insights may enable you to consider the choices available to you for change and may place you in a better position to manage your future.
I mainly work as a psychodynamic counsellor. This form of therapy entails identifying recurring life patterns in order to gain insight into changing them. I work in a holistic way in order to promote healing and balance.
As a couples counsellor I can provide a neutral space where you and your partner can express your feelings and can consider the relationship patterns which have developed between you. You may have relationship issues which you have been unable to resolve, you may be unsure about whether to stay together or separate, one partner may have had an affair or communication may have broken down, making it difficult for you to move forward. Couples counselling entails seeing both partners together for a series of counselling sessions.
In addition to my private practice with young people, adults and couples some of my recent counselling work has been within the educational sector in secondary schools and at a university. I work with young people from age 15 upwards. I also undertake adoption work in relation to new adoptive placements and attachment issues.
Prior to my career as a counsellor I worked for thirty years as a social worker with adults, young people and children and families within a variety of settings.Through this work I have developed specialist knowledge of pregnancy and childbirth, HIV and AIDS and chronic and terminal illness as well as in-depth knowledge about the impact of attachment issues on relationships.
I have worked for the Gloucestershire Counselling Service (GCS), which is affiliated to the Westminster Pastoral Foundation, for several years as a counsellor. I have subsequently undertaken a post-graduate training, a couples training and a time-limited therapy training at GCS in addition to a course in Mindfulness.
During our first meeting we can look at your main concerns and we can then consider how to proceed from there.
I offer counselling in a central location in Cheltenham which can be easily accessed from Cirencester,
Tewkesbury and Gloucester. My Stroud practice is a fifteen-minute walk from the town centre.
I am a registered practitioner with WPA Health Insurance, PruHealth and Aviva.
