About me

I have over 28 years NHS experience working in psychological services in adult mental health. In my private practice I work with a wide variety of concerns, such as relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, feelings of emptiness, problems with coping and lack of confidence.

Individual Counselling

There are many reasons why you might be thinking about individual counselling, from dealing with adverse life events to feeling overwhelmed by difficult feelings that seem to have little obvious cause but disrupt your personal life.

You may be considering counselling because you want to understand yourself and your relationships better - either personally or in your workplace; or you may be considering talking about something painful or difficult that you have been struggling with for some time.

I offer a safe and confidential space where you will not be judged. I can help you make links between your present difficulties and your past experiences. Recognising and understanding your problems will help you to cope better and feel more in control of your life.

In the first consultation you have the opportunity to tell me about your concerns and what has brought you to consider counselling, and you can get a sense of how I work. At this stage you may wish to think about what we talked about before you decide whether you feel counselling offers a way forward.

Couple Counselling

It can be beneficial to attend counselling as a couple in order to address difficulties between you in a supportive and neutral environment. Couple counselling can help you see your relationship from another viewpoint, and help you to discuss difficult feelings, different values or expectations with the help of a counsellor. To enable you to think together about your relationship and what lies behind your current difficulties, paying attention both to past and present experiences and what you can do to change your situation for the better.

Couples counselling can help you voice your concerns and help you communicate more clearly with each other.

I am experienced in working with both same-sex and heterosexual couples, whether married/in a civil partnership, living together or apart, separated or divorced. I am committed to working respectfully with different cultural or religious beliefs.

The initial consultation will give you the opportunity to explore your problems and decide whether couples counselling would be the way forward for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have over 28 years’ experience working in the NHS in senior positions as a Dramatherapist in Clinical Psychology and Arts Psychotherapies departments in secondary care Adult Mental Health. Working with individuals and groups providing dramatherapy and psychotherapeutic interventions whilst also clinically supervising Trainees and Allied Health Professionals.

In my private practice I work with individuals and couples offering both open ended and time limited counselling. I provide supervision to Trainees and experienced Counsellors and Arts Psychotherapists. I am an accredited member with the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists, registered with the Health & Care Professions Council, member of the British Association of Dramatherapists and associate member with the Institute of Group Analysis and subscribe to their published code of ethics.

In my capacity as a group work practitioner I have run experiential groups for the Counselling Foundation for the trainees of their foundation and diploma courses in psychodynamic counselling.

I have run clinical supervision groups for staff in the charity sector.

I have been a visiting university lecturer to Arts Psychotherapies MA training courses.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.
