About me

I am a fully qualified and experienced clinical psychologist. I use a range of evidence-based approaches in helping you to understand and overcome your difficulties. I have a well-established private practice offering psychological help for a wide range of difficulties, ranging from very specific short-term issues to more complex long-standing difficulties. I also worked within the NHS for 15 years with adolescents and adults experiencing a range of severe and complex psychological difficulties.

I have substantial experience of treating a wide range of problems including depression, phobias, health anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessional tendencies and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and the effects of childhood trauma (e.g physical/sexual abuse), adjustment to loss/bereavement, problems with relationships and personality disorder.  I can also offer help for more general difficulties (e.g. poor confidence and low self-esteem, stress, anger-management, self-harm).  This list is not exhaustive, and this is because everyone is unique.  Psychological difficulties can present in many specific and varied ways.  My role is to assist people in making sense of their experiences and symptoms, in order to help them to make positive changes and improve their psychological well-being.   The majority of my experience is with adults, though I also work with adolescents who are struggling to cope with their transition to adulthood.

Within my private work, I endeavour to ensure that my clients are offered the most appropriate form of treatment, and my clinical opinion is informed by governmental guidelines for treating common mental health disorders using evidence-based practice. However, I also believe that personal choice and preference should be factored into any treatment plan. In this respect I will endeavour to undertake a comprehensive assessment of your needs, and think with you about the best approach to addressing your problems.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a fully qualified Clinical Psychologist Registered with the Health and Care Professions  Council.  I have a D.Clin.Psy and a PhD, and prior to obtaining these doctorates I completed a B.Sc (Hons) in Applied Psychology.

Throughout my professional career in clinical psychology I have undertaken various trainings and clinical supervision to develop my skills in a range of therapeutic approaches including psychodynamically-informed treatments, group analysis and cognitive-behavioral  (CBT) models.  I have also undertaken training in more specialist therapeutic approaches including psychodynamic interpersonal therapy (PIT), mentalization based treatment (MBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills based training (DBT skills).  Regular attendance at conferences and workshops enable me to keep abreast of developments in the field of mental health.  My specialism is the field of personality disorder and attachment based problems. A lot of my work over the last four years has been in offering intensive therapy for people with Borderline Personality Disorder.

I have also been involved in teaching on undergraduate and post-graduate psychology courses across the North West, including the doctoral training for clinical psychologists.  Earlier in my career I published academic research on self-harm, and shared the findings of my research on the effects of video game play on Radio 4 and through The Independent newspaper.  However, the majority of my career has been dedicated to utilising my clinical skills to enable people to improve their psychological well-being and to make positive changes in their lives.
