About me

In private practice since 2003, I know that the heart of effective counselling is the experience of trust in the therapist.  This is based on clinical evidence and personal experience.

Often people are drawn to counselling through experiencing anxiety or depression to different degrees.  Maybe this is impacting your life to the point that it feels unmanageable.

Or it may be that you are facing a sudden crisis, resolving past experiences, wanting to understand yourself better.

I suggest we start by a phone call or Zoom conversation. Others prefer to outline a focus by email.  We can then agree to start meeting or discuss other options.

As an integrative counsellor, I bring the right approach to suit your specific needs. Some people prefer a structured approach or to use aspects of CBT; others may prefer a more psychodynamic method to help understand past experiences in depth.

I provide a supportive and reflective environment in which we can work, giving you time and space.  Being non-judgemental is key to my work.

ABOUT ME
Years ago in a pastoral context I supported those going through bereavement. This was after I had been through a number of losses in a very short time, including friends dying in a bombing.

A few years later I became seriously ill.  Afterwards I had a block of time limited counselling. This helped me sort through how I was feeling and reacting to the consequences and impact of the illness, including losing my job.

The above two experiences of listening to and being listened to are part of what led me to become a counsellor.  I believe in the power of therapy through personal experience.

I'm interested the process and power of creativity. I used to work in an art gallery but I can't draw or paint. Being creative to me seems close to playing, enjoying being in the moment, from cooking to gardening, personally and professionally.

How do I work?

Either after having spoken or by email, we arrange an initial session after which we can agree to work for 6 sessions. Then we review how things are going.

The first stage is getting more aware of what is happening now, so we understand key factors including influences, experiences and beliefs. This mapping of experience gives us a platform to think about change.

We can then work together to identify what could be different and begin to put those different ways of behaving and responding into action.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
