About me

Hello and a warm welcome! Thank you for taking the time to read my profile. I guess you may be trying to make the best choice you can regarding your therapy. I very much hope this formation will give you a sense of me and how I work. This way you will have a good idea of what our work together could be like.

I have been a therapist for 20 years. I have worked in the NHS for over 10 years as a psychotherapist, counsellor, group facilitator, supervisor and trainer as well as in a senior position as Lead Psychological Therapist. I had also worked as a volunteer for CRUSE Bereavement Services and Survivors' Network, which gives me indepth knowledge of issues surrounding abuse, loss and bereavement.

In my career I have worked with people from all walks of life and with many different psychological difficulties. However, I know from my clients that they shared one common experience: something bad has happened and they struggle with their life as a result.

I have successfully worked with people who saw me because they:

  • struggled in their personal relationships
  • experienced excessive worry or anxiety
  • experienced panic attacks
  • had self esteem issues
  • struggled with low mood and depression
  • had phobias or OCD
  • tried to cope with life by mis-using alcohol or drugs
  • had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • had a difficult relationship with food
  • suffered childhood abuse or neglect
  • lost an important person in their life and struggled
  • had experienced trauma
  • lost an aspect of their health
  • had fertility issues, which were effecting them and their relationship
  • and many more....

Therapy can feel scary- I know and understand it. I often say to my clients that in some ways it can feel really strange to come and see a complete stranger and talk about things that feel very personal. So taking this first step is a courageous thing to do and well done for considering it! My job is to make the process of us finding a way forward from your difficulties easier. Most people tell me they feel very different at the end of the first session than at the beginning- there is a sense of hope and relief. Plus the reality of therapy is most of the time less scary than the idea of it.

You probably can imagine what it would feel like to have a good and supportive person on your team. Somebody who is there for you, who gives you hope, walks at your speed, has time for you, accepts you, cheers you on, helps you work things out, celebrates your successes, laughs with you at a joke and is with you when you are sad. Somebody who helps you see all that you have achieved already and who the good people in your life are. Somebody who wishes you well and has your best interests at heart.

Well, that's really how I see my role as a therapist.

The particulars of what may have effected us are different for each person. You may have had problematic relationship with your mum or dad or pehaps another important figure in your early life. You may have experienced an adverse event in your life or several of them. Loss, bereavement, trauma, illness or an intensly frightenening experience are all examples. Sometimes it is difficult to know at first what may have effected us because our life is our only reality and we tend not to question it.

This is where I come in as a therapist. My first task is to give you a sense of hope for a better future. I will do my best to make you feel at ease and relaxed. I will help you identify all your strengths and the positive aspects of your life so that you begin to notice them too and start feeling better about yourself. We will explore the problem together and make useful links to all the contributing factors. Slowly and at your pace, we will explore ways forward and I will be with you each step of the way.

You will be able to see me for a length of time that suits you. Some people have benefited hugely from just a few sessions, others have found that longer term support works for them better. Together we will discuss your treatment and you will be able to make an informed decision about what type of therapy might be best for you.

I have experience and training in utilising several approaches for your benefit. All of these have been recommended by NICE guidelines (the "Bible of treatment" in the NHS). They are:

  • Counselling
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for anxiety and depression,
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitazation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

My private practice is called Talk for Change (the clue is in the name!) and I strive to provide friendly and accessible psychological help using evidence based therapies.

Talk for Change is ideally situated in the peaceful location of Lindfield to provide individually tailored psychological services -counselling and psychotherapy- for clients from Lindfield, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Lewes, Newick, Chailey and the surrounding areas and is only a short drive away from Brighton and Hove.

The consulting room is very private, discreetly located on the top floor, above Abbott's Pharmacy, Lindfield. There is free on-street parking outside as well as 3 free car parks within a 2 minute walk.

"Reaching out for help is a very brave thing to do. It shows you have courage. It shows you have hope for a better future. It also shows you know you matter. These positive attitudes will stand you in good stead on your road to recovery. Together we will harness all the qualities that have served you well already to help you find a way forward now."

Training, qualifications & experience

I have training and experience of delivering several evidence-based and NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recommended therapies. In particular I use:

  • Counselling
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for the treatment of trauma and other psychological difficulties where adverse life experiences are the root cause
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) to help treat difficulties in relationships, life adjustments and losses
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for anxiety and depression.

I am registered with UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). I am a fully accredited Consultant with EMDR Association UK and Ireland. I am also a fully accredited Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) for Depression Practitioner with IPTUK and have been a trainer and facilitator of CBT group therapy for anxiety and depression.

I have a particular interest in helping clients leave behind the legacy of difficult, painful and/or traumatic past to start living in the present, without the limitations imposed by the negative experiences from the past.
