About me

I offer a safe and non-judgemental space, where we can focus on any problems that are causing you distress, with the intention of gaining greater insight and clarity. By working together collaboratively we agree a focus for our work together and any goals you would like to work towards. We may also explore  different ways of understanding and managing what is not working for you, to discover alternatives that feel more effective and empowering.

I provide an Integrative, solution focused approach to working with clients. This means I can draw upon various creative approaches to personal problems and the process of change. I specialise in working with clients for a short number of sessions, which is useful for clients that want to focus on specific issues.

As an Accredited Counsellor with 16 years experience of working in various settings, I offer a range of approaches, so we can tailor our work together to suit your specific needs.

I can use various therapeutic approaches and self-help tools including:

  • EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique (helps to release emotional and physical blockages)

What Type of Issues Can Counselling Help With?
Some of the main issues that may be relevant during counselling are:
Being unhappy about your:

Feelings (Stress, anxiety, depression, sadness, grief, anger, fear, loneliness)

Thinking (Confusion, limiting beliefs, problems making decisions, repetitive negative thoughts, worrying, difficulty finding meaning in life)

Behaviour (Procrastination, actions that have unhelpful consequences, unhealthy patterns, habits)

Life Circumstances: Modern life has become more stressful for a great deal of people and healthy ways of coping are not always easy to find, or sufficient during particularly stressful periods. Many people are finding themselves worrying about finances, and handling difficult relationships at home and work, while others maybe facing painful losses whether this is a job, health, relationship or a bereavement. During times of stress we need additional support and a sense of perspective. This may not always be forthcoming and despite their best intentions, those close to us may give us unhelpful advice or simply not understand. When our challenges seem to be longer term it's also common to want to avoid burdening others. For these reasons many people have found counselling to be helpful and supportive

What Can I Expect?
Some clients call for an informal chat, or make an enquiry by email first before deciding whether to book an appointment. I am happy to assist with any counselling enquiries without any obligation. It is important that you feel comfortable with the Counsellor you choose, and I am happy to provide information about how counselling works before you decide whether counselling is the right way forward for you

During the first session we will have an opportunity to meet in person and talk about what you are hoping to gain from counselling. This is also an opportunity to experience how counselling works and to ask any questions you may have

Usually counselling lasts for 50 minutes once a week. It can be for a few sessions, as a one off session, or more typically it can continue over weeks, or months depending on what you prefer

Experience
I am an Accredited Counsellor and member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and have been in counselling practice since 1997. I have worked in a number of health and social care settings. This includes counselling within a GP Practice, working on a helpline for a national charity and also working for a charity as a Bereavement and Loss Counsellor. For three years I worked in a specialist Cancer Hospital and more recently I also spent three years as a Workplace Counsellor for employees. I currently have a private practice providing counselling in Totnes and also provide Telephone Counselling for various EAP's (Employee Assistance Programmes)

I am an Integrative Counsellor with a person-centred background and also have specific training to enable me to provide brief solution focused work. I work with clients in a way that is accepting and empathetic, yet empowers clients to find ways of managing that encourages greater well-being. Whether you prefer working in a practical way, over a short number of sessions for a specific problem, or prefer to explore your feelings and personal history in more depth, my approach is based on working collaboratively with clients and I will endeavour to work in a way that is most useful for you
