Angela Forrester MBACP Manchester and Oldham based Counsellor and Supervisor
My name is Angela and I am a qualified counsellor/supervisor and a registered member of BACP. I work in a professional and ethical manner and encourage the promotion of self growth with my clients through a structured process. Counselling is basically an opportunity for you to share your feelings and experiences in confidence with a qualified professional you can trust. I mainly use the Person Centered model of therapy, however because everyone is different with a range of issues and experiences, I also like to use other techniques which can be effective in varying circumstances. These include but are not limited to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Gestalt, art therapy and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is more goal focussed on maybe one specific problem that you may have. This technique can be helpful for those suffering with anxieties or phobias. The counsellor would assist the client with strategies or techniques which may help address the problem.
Gestalt Therapy focusses on the individual's experience in the present and their environment. This can be a more action focussed type of therapy rather than just talking.
Art Therapy can be helpful with clients who find it difficult to express feelings and emotions verbally. A wide range of tools can be used including paints, pencil and pad, clay or plasticine which can help the client to convey their emotions in a safe and effective way.
Emotional Freedom Technique is a form of energy therapy based on the meridian channels used in acupuncture (can also be known as 'psychological acupuncture'). The process consists of tapping on the meridian pressure points whilst focusing on an emotional or even a physical problem.
I have previous experience working with vulnerable adults with mild-moderate mental health issues in various settings such as a women's only centre for those suffering from domestic violence and also in a medium secure hospital for Deaf or hard of hearing persons.
Some people might find the first step towards seeing a counsellor a little daunting - particularly if you have never had therapy before, but given the increasing stresses and strains of modern life, more and more people are seeking the support of a counsellor to help them with their issues.
Fact: 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year (www.mentalhealth.org.uk)
Although this is quite an alarming realisation, it also suggests that you are not alone.
I offer relationship counselling for couples. Couples - regardless of sexual orientation - fundamentally need to nurture and aid the growth of their relationships in a positive and healthy manner, however like most things in life, these are skills that are not taught in school - it is learned along the way, sometimes through a difficult and destructive path. However counselling can offer a safe, structured discussion which can yield positive results - whether this is learning how to listen to each other or being more tolerant with each other - being proactive rather than reactive!
I offer email counselling. Email counselling consists of a series of emails between you and I whereby you are able to express your thoughts and feelings and experiences. Like a counselling session, I am available at the end of the email, reading your every word in listening in an empathic and non judgemental manner. Hopefully we will be able to explore your issue in some relational depth and help you to find a way moving forward in your life.
I am a qualified Counselling Supervisor. Supervision is vital for counsellors in practice to ensure that they are working ethically and safely and to a professional standard. I feel that I am able to offer cost effective and supportive supervision for both qualified and counsellors in training alike. Please get in touch if you would like further information.
