18 Bonington Road
I am a very experienced and well qualified Counsellor and Cognitive Hypnotherapist, and I have had a broad life experience before becoming a counsellor, including spells in the Forces, in Management, as a Samaritan and Young Offender Mentor
In 2005 I started training as a counsellor and since then have been very focused on my own personal development and training, learning a wide range of different therapeutic approaches, skills and techniques.
Through Neuroscience, we now know much more about the brain and the mind/body system, and the whole area is constantly evolving and changing. This means I believe it is important for me to keep abreast of new thinking and to incorporate that into my practice. Furthermore everybody is different and so I believe that therapy requires knowledge and flexibility to achieve the best results.
I have therefore trained in a wide range of different approaches (as you can see from my qualifications below) and have a deep and broad skills base. I use this to work collaboratively with you, to tailor the therapy to your specific needs and to find a positive, helpful way forward that you are comfortable with.
I am passionate about making a difference by helping people to rediscover their own strengths and resources and in supporting them to make the changes that enable them to break free of the unhelpful thought patterns, beliefs and destabilising emotions that make life so hard.
My approach is more focused on building a positive future for you, than spending a lot of time exploring the past. Where possible the nature of the therapy tends to be more short term and solution focused. However some clients, particularly those with complex and traumatic histories, often need longer term counselling, with the starting point on building safety and stability before anything else is approached. The goals, pace and course of the work we do together will always be agreed with you.
Where appropriate, I also believe strongly in psycho-education, helping you understand what is happening to cause those problems and in teaching you the tools and techniques to better manage specific problems and your general mental health for a better future. Empowering you in this way is very important, as it gives you the skills to ensure that you are more resourceful and able to deal much more effectively with life's difficulties as they occur in the future. You will be much more in control and much less likely to suffer a relapse.
