About me

I am an experienced and fully qualified counsellor. It is my belief that counselling can benefit everyone at times of distress, when feeling down, or simply just feeling overwhelmed. I have lots of experience dealing with Anxiety , Depression, and helping people work through difficult situations in their relationships. I also have experience dealing with generalise anxiety disorder where you may feel anxious for no apparent reason. This can feel unsettling and often have physical symptoms also.

These are some of the areas that I commonly work with: anxiety, depression, generalised anxiety disorder, and relationship issues.

I feel that the most important part of counselling is the counselling relationship which will allow the feeling of trust that is necessary to allow us to explore the difficult feelings that you are experiencing.

I offer a space to explore whatever feelings you may be experiencing in a non-judgemental way. I will treat any information with the strictest confidentiality. This is important because it will allow you to have the confidence and the comfort to know that whatever is discussed will remain safe and will not be shared with any other person.

My way of working is based in a psychodynamic theoretical orientation.  However, I do not operate in silence when working because it is important to have some feedback that will enable you to feel a connection with me and that we are working together to help you understand what is going on for you.

How the first session works

If you have never had counselling this can be a very intimidating because you will have all sorts of worry’s and fears about me and the process.

We will talk about the “ground rules” of how our work together will work broadly this will be as follows:

  • Meeting on a weekly basis at the same time and day for our session which will last 50 minutes
  • We will talk about the fee and how it is best for you to pay.
  • We will talk about what has brought you to counselling. This will form the bulk of our first session.
  • We will close by talking about how the session has gone and if you wish to work together going forward. We will talk about if youwant towork in a short term or a more open ended which will be informed by the nature of the issue and the practical life circumstances that you are in.

Counselling is a process, and the pace of that process is determined by you.  You will have control over what we discuss and when we do address certain topics of discussion. I believe counselling can offer more self-awareness which leads to the ability to make informed and better choices about your actions, rather than simply acting out of habit.

I work with people who are in training to become counsellor’s fees for this work will negotiated on our first session. I am fully aware of the financial commitment that being in therapy can be for people who are in training.

I am an accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy ( BACP). Being a member of BACP, I work with and am bound by their ethical way of working

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

I work in a psychodynamic way.  We would meet on a weekly basis at an agreed time that is convenient to both of us, and this time period would remain yours for the duration of our working together.

The length of the sessions will be 50 minutes.

The focus of our work will be lead by you and it can be as wide-ranging or as focused as you wish. I have worked with clients for  12 sessions and some for a more extended period of time.

Anything explored and discussed in the counselling room is confidential.  All discussions will be within the constraints of legal requirements, which will be explained in a first session.

I am a member of the BACP and, as such, I am committed to working ethically within their guidelines. As such, I will be using the services of a supervisor who will ensure my adherence to ethical and professional standards, but your confidentiality will always be maintained.

I work with individuals, adults, and with people in training to become therapists. I also work with people from  the legal profession who are having difficulties.
