I am a registered counsellor with BACP and a registered psychotherapist with UKCP. I am in the final year of a professional Doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy and with my business background I have over thirty years’ experience of helping people face personal and professional difficulties.
Considering counselling is a positive thought but may create questions or anxieties around whether to proceed. I view counselling as an opportunity to reflect on how you are living and choices you are making, on where you are and where you want to be. All of us face struggles with life and we can achieve most when we face these rather than avoiding them. Counselling provides the time and space to explore, reflect and be truly heard.
Existential psychotherapy is an approach informed by existential philosophy and is concerned with making sense of the world in the face of whatever difficulties we may be experiencing. It is not a medical model that is concerned with diagnosis and categorization, but is about making sense of everyday life experience. It is about encouraging you to find your own answers according to your values and beliefs. I see my clients as individuals, complex and multidimensional within the context of their lives and I do not attempt to create simplistic solutions to labels that might have been placed upon them.
I believe our current relationships and the way we are with others are influenced by our past events and how we understood them at the time. I am interested in the way we unknowingly repeat these patterns although they may no longer be helpful and may, perhaps, contribute to our current difficulties.
I will provide a safe, confidential and containing space to explore the things you are finding difficult to cope with and I work in an open, warm and non-judgmental way. My aim is to work in partnership with you on aspects of your life that you wish to clarify or change. This work usually brings a feeling of relief and enables you to feel less stuck.
Training, qualifications & experience
I worked for approximately eighteen years in Human Resources and reached a senior position with a global professional services organisation. I then managed my own limited company as an executive coach working with more than six hundred clients over twenty-one years. Most of my clients were senior executives wishing to change aspects of their career and/or personal life. This experience enables me to blend coaching with therapy if that is appropriate for you. In 2012 I started a professional Doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy at Middlesex University. My research is concerned with the creation of an existential phenomenological model of family therapy when working with alcohol problems. I hope to present my findings to a viva in late 2016.
During my training I volunteered over four hundred fifty hours of counselling to two mental health charities and worked with many individuals affected by drugs and/or alcohol. I also provided a counselling service to two High Schools where I worked with adolescents on issues such as self harm.
I am a registered member of BACP, UKCP and a member of the Society of Existential Analysis. I have experience of working therapeutically with clients aged 13 to 67 on a wide range of personal issues. I adhere to the Codes of Ethics and Practice of the BACP and UKCP and these require my work to be professionally and regularly supervised.
